179209 Pocket Artic by Pocket SLP Review & GiveawayPocket Artic by PocketSLP?is a univeral app which helps children with articulation delays related to speech. ?Pocket SLP was started by Corey Walker and his wife Karen Lopez-Walker who are both speech pathologists in 2009 after they noticed that their three year old son was using their iPod touch for educational learning. ??This app provides over two thousand flashcards which target both individual words and sentences allowing children to be involved using auditory feedback, sensory feedback via pushing buttons and swiping the way through the app. ?The app offers 29 phoneme (sound) selections, including seven /r/ and it?s variations. ?The app was developed by practicing speech and language?pathologists?(SLPs) and allows the parent or person working with the child to select which phonemes they need to work on in any given session. ?The app uses real time scoring and provides a summary screen which reveals percentages specific to the phoneme and word position which can be useful for testing related to mastery of these sounds. ?This app can be used with multiple children making it useful for therapists, teachers and parents of multiple children with speech delays. ? The app features a variety of methods to use it, including ?auditory feedback? which can be turned on/off or ?silly sounds?; ?practice mode? which allows the child to practice and have language modeling; word or sentence level practice which allows either a single word or a sentence containing the target phoneme; randomization of cards after completing the deck and ability to email the results.

I liked that my son was cued to describe the images on the screen during the app and that real time scoring was involved to allow me to better understand how he was doing. ?I shared the summary data with his speech therapist which helped her to understand how we were doing in our home program. ?I also liked seeing the images which indicated how the?tongue?should be positioned for the phoneme which was targeted, although as a parent I?m sure they were not as useful to me as they would be to a speech therapist. ?As a parent, it was helpful to work with the speech therapist to understand how to best use the app before initiating it in our home program and I would encourage others to do so. ?I also liked that we were able to tailor the program to my son?s needs rather than having to use cards which were not necessary for his speech program.

I think that the directions were a little confusing ? I would suggest that a prompt for the introductory video pops up when using the app for the first time. ?This answers many questions and eases frustration especially when adding people as clients to the app. ?I would have also liked the ability to ?sound out? words that might be difficult for a particular child. ?Although it focuses on sound development ? a word like ?kitchen? can be very difficult for a child and unless they are able to hear it multiple times correctly they may have trouble modeling the word.
