'War criminal': UK ex-PM Blair heckled while testifying

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was accused of being "a war criminal" by a heckler who burst into a courtroom as he testified at an U.K. inquiry into media ethics on Monday.

Updated at 10:49 a.m. ET: LONDON - Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair was accused of being "a war criminal" by a heckler who burst into a courtroom as he testifed at an U.K. inquiry into media ethics on Monday.?

The protester, who gave his name as?David Lawley-Wakelin,?shouted?that Blair?should be arrested -- but only seconds later he was?bundled away by security staff.

He yelled at Blair, who is a?$2.5-million-a-year adviser to U.S. investment bank JP Morgan:?"This man should be arrested for war crimes. JP Morgan paid him off for the Iraq war, three months after he invaded Iraq."?

In response to the outburst, Blair said: "Can I just say on the record what he said about Iraq and JP Morgan is completely and totally untrue. I have never had a?discussion with them about that."

Lawley-Wakelin describes himself online as?a documentary film-maker working on a project called the "The Alternative Iraq Enquiry", for which he has traveled to Iraq.

ITV News reported he was being questioned by police, but later released.

Sky News reported that an investigation was immediately launched into how he entered the secure area of the court - an embarrassing breach of security less than a year after Rupert Murdoch was hit by a custard pie at a inquiry into the same subject at Britain's parliament.

Prior to the interruption, Blair was facing questions about his relationship with Murdoch.

Blair, who served as prime minister between 1997 and 2007, was the latest senior politician?to appear?at the investigation set up last year in the wake of a phone-hacking scandal when it emerged that reporters at the Murdoch-owned News of the World tabloid had routinely hacked into the phones of public figures. Other witnesses have included actor Hugh Grant, as well as Murdoch and his son James.

Blair is godfather to one of the powerful News Corp. chairman and CEO.'s children.

Ordered by Prime Minister David Cameron, the inquiry has tarnished Britain's elite by laying bare the collusion between politicians, the police and the media.

Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair testified this morning about his close ties to media mogul Rupert Murdoch, who's News of the World tabloid is in the middle of a phone-hacking scandal. NBC's Stephanie Gosk reports.

While Blair is no longer active in British politics, the inquiry may still prove uncomfortable as it examines issues such as his decision after stepping down as prime minister to become a godfather to Murdoch's daughter Grace at a ceremony on the banks of the River Jordan.

"Blair led the way in having no shame about courting Murdoch," said Ivor Gaber, professor of political journalism at City University. "He set the style and the standard and if you regard Cameron as the 'heir to Blair' then it's not exactly surprising that he followed suit."

The BBC reported that, giving evidence earlier in May, one of Mr Blair's former Cabinet ministers told the inquiry he felt the relationship had "arguably" become "closer than wise".

Murdoch told the inquiry last month that he had never asked a prime minister for anything.

Blair set the tone for his relationship with Britain's press when he flew to Australia in 1995 to speak before a gathering of Murdoch's executives who had previously used their British tabloids to vilify his Labour Party predecessors.

'Into the lion's den'
The decision infuriated much of his left-of-center party who saw the Australian-born tycoon as a right-winger who had helped to keep them out of power for years.

"People would be horrified," Blair said later in his autobiography. "On the other hand ... not to go was to say 'carry on and do your worst,' and we knew their worst was very bad indeed."

Former News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks and her husband, Charlie Brooks, have been charged with perverting the course of justice during the U.K. phone hacking scandal. ITV's Keir Simmons reports.

"The country's most powerful newspaper proprietor, whose publications have hitherto been rancorous in their opposition to the Labour party, invites us into the lion's den. You go, don't you?"

With the backing of Murdoch's top-selling Sun tabloid, Blair swept to power in 1997 and again in 2001 and 2005. But with an ever-increasing reputation for public relations "spin", he started to face questions over his sincerity.

"Tony Blair quickly became famous in Fleet Street for inviting in one group of newspaper people and telling them how skeptical he was about Europe; and then inviting in another lot and telling them how keen he was on Europe," Andrew Marr, a senior BBC journalist, told the inquiry.

"But the different groups compared notes, and his reputation was not hugely enhanced."

Much of that came to a head when Blair and then President George W. Bush agreed to invade Iraq, going against the public opinion in Britain.

Blair is likely to be asked why he spoke to Murdoch three times in the days leading up to the Iraq war and whether this had any impact on the fact that all Murdoch's papers supported the unpopular invasion.

Rupert Murdoch returned to the Leveson Inquiry to give evidence for a second day. ITV's Paul Davis reports.

He will also be asked whether his reliance on Britain's press meant that he did not properly scrutinize their role in society and whether any group, such as Murdoch's UK arm, News International, had too much control of the market.

"There was a desperation to get the Sun onside and to get News International on side, basically at all costs," Liverpool University's political professor Jonathan Tonge, told Reuters. "And if that meant sacrificing a serious analysis of the relationship and the health of the relationship, then so be it."?

Facebook phone may finally become reality

You've heard it before, but this time it may come to fruition: Facebook is working on its own phone.?

Why would it be different this time than in the past, when such an effort was reported, although denied by the social networking giant??

There are at least a few reasons:?Google, definitely not Facebook's BFF, recently completed the purchase of Motorola Mobility; and ahead of Facebook's recent?IPO, the company acknowledged that mobile is a key area in which it needs to grow, with more and more?Facebook users accessing the site via mobile than on computers. And right now, the social network has not pushed advertising ??its key revenue source ? onto mobile. Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg contends that will change,?saying recently that transforming its mobile and advertising experience are top priorities in 2012. ? ??

"We don't comment on rumor and speculation," said a Facebook spokeswoman when asked for comment by msnbc.com about the Facebook phone. But, she added, "Our mobile strategy is simple: We think every mobile device is better if it is deeply social. We're working across the entire mobile industry; with operators, hardware manufacturers, OS providers and application developers to bring powerful social experiences to more people around the world."

Of additional interest: Facebook is also looking at buying Opera, the mobile Web browser prized for its efficiency. In a report Tuesday, Reuters quoted Arctic Securities as saying such an acquisition would "enhance the now limited mobile experience of Facebook, improve Facebook's mobile monetization problem, help Facebook retain online game developers leaving the social network over the lack of a mobile platform and further improve Facebook's ability to target ads."?

The New York Times reported over the weekend that "people briefed on Facebook's plans" say the company "hopes to release its own smartphone by next year. These people spoke only on the condition of anonymity for fear of jeopardizing their employment or relationships with Facebook."

Facebook has "already hired more than half a dozen former Apple software and hardware engineers who worked on the?iPhone, and one who worked on the?iPad, the employees and those briefed on the plans said."

Last year, HTC released what was described as a Facebook phone, with a dedicated hard-key button for Facebook on it. The phone, called the Status, never took the market by storm like the iPhone or Samsung Galaxy or Motorola Droid models.?

The Bachelorette ran it back with another partially-contrived, unintentionally hilarious, uber-dramatic episode tonight on Memorial Day. And what an episode.

Okay, it was pretty run-of-the-mill. But between some vintage Bachelorette cliches, a romantic date with Arie Luyendyk, Jr., and some man tears, it had its moments.

Dario Franchitti wins 3rd Indy 500

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? It was an hour before the Indianapolis 500, and Dario Franchitti and Tony Kanaan found a quiet corner to prepare for the race. They were interrupted by Parnelli Jones, Bobby Unser and Johnny Rutherford, three of the greatest drivers in IndyCar history.

"T.K. and I were getting our pictures taken. We were like a couple of kids," Franchitti said. "We were with the legends of the sport."

Hey, Dario, you're a legend now, too.

Franchitti became the 10th driver in the 96 years of Indianapolis to win three or more 500s, picking up his third on Sunday by winning a last-lap trophy dash with Takuma Sato to the checkered flag. Sato tried to pass for the lead going into the first turn, pulled even with Franchitti, then spun hard into the wall after their wheels appeared to make contact.

It let Franchitti sail away to the win on a day that started and ended as a tribute to Dan Wheldon, who won the race a year ago but was killed in an October crash in the IndyCar season finale. Finishing right behind him was teammate Scott Dixon and then Kanaan ? three of D-Dub's closest friends.

"Everybody up there was a friend of Dan's, and that about sums it up. Everybody loved him," Franchitti said as bagpipes played over the public address system. "I think D-Dub would be proud of that one."

Franchitti can be proud of what he's done.

The Scot has long been reluctant to consider his place in IndyCar history, even though his accomplishments have clearly made him one of the greats. He's won the last three championships, has three Indy 500 wins and with 31 career victories is tied with Sebastien Bourdais and Paul Tracy on the all-time wins list.

One more win will move Franchitti into seventh place in the record books. The only drivers ahead of him? The giants of open-wheel racing: three Unsers, two Andrettis and A.J. Foyt, the all-time wins leader.

"I'm very proud of the achievements, whether it's Indy wins, championships, every one of the race wins," he said. "Sometimes I look back, but generally I'm trying to look forward. When I retire, that's the time to look back."

Much of his success has come since 2009, when he returned from a brief foray into NASCAR. Franchitti ran only 12 races in stock cars in 2008, missing a stretch with a broken ankle before owner Chip Ganassi pulled the plug on the team because of sponsorship woes.

He was back in IndyCar the next year, rolling on to become the most decorated driver in the series. Franchitti has 13 wins, two Indy 500s and three consecutive championships since his return.

"He was back to something that he was really comfortable with and around the people that he knew really well," Dixon said. "I think he was actually hungry after that, too, because he wanted to prove when he came back that he was still the driver that he was. He's definitely done that ? maybe a little too much."

It's fitting that his latest feat came at Indy, where Wheldon was on everyone's minds Sunday.

And as his three friends lined up with six laps remaining for the final restart ? Kanaan out front, Franchitti and Dixon second and third ? they couldn't help but wonder if Wheldon was at play.

"Kind of like old times, the three of us back and forwards," Franchitti said. "I thought, 'Dan is laughing at us right now going at it.'"

The elation for Franchitti's win was tempered by the heartbreak for two other deserving drivers. Dixon, a one-time Indy 500 winner, temporarily relocated his family to St. Petersburg, Fla., to support Wheldon's wife and two sons, and Kanaan, 0 for 11 now at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, had openly wept following the death of his former teammate.

"I think a lot of us that were close to Dan, you know, you wanted it that little bit more," Dixon said. "I guess maybe in the back of your mind, you figured he would probably help you out today, too. I think in that situation, seeing how it lined up with the top three, three of Dan's friends, it was a tough one."

The race had developed into what was expected to be a duel to the finish between Franchitti and Dixon. But when the Scot made his final pass of Dixon with two laps to go, he pulled Sato with him and it sapped Dixon's momentum.

So the last-lap pass attempt was Sato's for the taking ? "Job done," he later admitted thinking ? but he couldn't pull it off as he hugged the inside white line through Turn 1. His wheels appeared to touch Franchitti's, he spun into the wall, and Franchitti pulled away past for the win ? this one, just like the first two, under caution.

Dixon crossed the finish line in second, and Kanaan was third, and Franchitti was reminded of the delicate balance in celebrating a team win vs. beating a teammate.

"I want to beat Scott. I know he wants to beat me. I don't think I've met maybe a more competitive individual, except maybe Dan in the early years," Franchitti said. "Out on the track, he's competition, but a teammate, and then afterward he's my friend. I see the disappointment in his face. I see the disappointment in T.K.'s face.

"I think both those guys will get more championships and Indy wins. They're just too good not to. When you beat guys like that, I take that as a big accomplishment because, God, they're not easy to beat."

Kanaan, who used a bold move on a late restart to dart from fifth to first, couldn't hold off Franchitti and Dixon on the last restart. He was OK with the final result.

"I don't think it could have been a better result for Dan," Kanaan said. "Wherever he is right now, he's definitely making fun of Sato, I can tell you that, and he's giving Dario a tap on the back for sure, and he was going to call me a wanker that I didn't win this thing.

"I'm glad this is over. I'm glad that now I hope we can all move on and just remember Dan the way Dan was ? a happy guy, a wonderful friend."

Wheldon's wife, Susie, went to Victory Lane to congratulate Franchitti, who hid his tears of joy behind a pair of white sunglasses worn in tribute because they were Wheldon's preference. She then sat next to Franchitti's wife, actress Ashley Judd, in the backseat of the convertible ? the same seat she had a year ago for Wheldon's win ? for the victory lap around the 2.5-mile oval.

The day opened with car owner Bryan Herta driving a single memorial lap around Indianapolis Motor Speedway in the car Wheldon drove to victory last year. Fans were given white sunglasses to wear on laps 26 and 98, marking the car numbers Wheldon used in his two wins.

It was Susie Wheldon's first trip to any race track since her husband's death, and she watched from Dixon's pit stand with his wife, Emma.

So it was apt on this hot day ? the temperature hit 91 degrees, just one shy of the Indy 500 record set in 1937 ? that one of the most competitive races in history ended with a frantic push from Wheldon's friends. Ten drivers swapped the lead 35 times, shattering the record of 29 in the 1960 race won by Jim Rathmann.

Until the last lap, when Sato made his move for the win, the race was close but largely incident free.

The only multi-car accident came when a spin by Mike Conway collected Will Power, who came to Indy as the series points leader and winner of the last three races this season. It was a somewhat frightening accident as Conway, who broke his front wing when he hit one of his crew members on pit road, hit the outside wall and his car tilted on its side before coming to rest. And Helio Castroneves had to deftly maneuver past a bouncing tire that still grazed one of his own wheels.

Besides that, though, the race was slowed by just seven other cautions ? including the one on the last lap ? for 39 of the 200 laps.

The series' next stop is June 3 in Belle Isle, Mich.

If you have been around spiritual circles over the last 5 years, I am sure you have heard of the law of attraction, which was highly popularized by the 2006 movie The Secret. And I am sure you are aware of the explosion of spiritual gurus and teachers of the law of attraction ever since then. The basic idea is simple: think positive, good-feeling thoughts and the universe will bring into your physical experience matching positive, good-feeling things for you to observe. So if you want the fancy car or the wonderful romantic relationship, think thoughts that are a vibrational match to how you imagine those things will make you feel and then you will draw those things into your experience. There are slight variations to how various teachers give expression to this, but roughly that is the main idea.

Non-duality on the other hand seems to say something very different. There are again slight variations among different non-dual paths, but overarching them seems to be the theme that it is important to accept reality the way it is. And it is only by accepting reality the way it is that we can open up to wholeness, divinity, enlightenment. Consequently, if you are upset about your car breaking down, accept that your car has broken down and accept that you are upset about it. But this seems to go against what the law of attraction people say: change the way you think about the situation so that you aren't negatively focused or if you are unable to do that just focus on something else. Actively trying to change the way you think doesn't sound like accepting the situation the way it is, and focusing on something else almost sounds like an encouragement to dissociate from reality and live in some imaginary fantasy land instead.

Because of this tension and apparent contradiction, I found it very difficult to come to terms with the law of attraction material. It felt like to me that either the law of attraction people had it wrong and were just a bunch of misguided wishful thinking gurus or there was a piece of the puzzle that was missing to make sense of it all. My questions or prayers got answered by a combination of a deeper understanding of non-duality and a much better and more subtle understanding of the law of attraction material. The latter is in great deal thanks to the so called Abraham-Hicks material, a refreshingly clear exposition of the law of attraction by Esther & Jerry Hicks. This deeper and clearer understanding of both subjects did not come overnight and I believe all in all it took me about two years to achieve. For although I understood or thought I understood that from a non-dual perspective there is nothing wrong with working on your personal psychology and changing the way you think or feel about certain things, I felt that all of that psychological work ultimately seemed a bit superfluous and what was really important was to awaken. Furthermore, although the audiobooks by Esther & Jerry Hicks made a lot more sense to me than The Secret and I enjoyed listening to them immensely, I continued feeling this tension between being with reality the way it is and the desire to change things and make things better. I took a very non-dual approach to all this. I allowed myself to vividly feel and experience the tension between these seemingly opposite approaches to spirituality. I held onto these questions in my awareness whilst also being mindful of not rushing to find a solution to this apparent contradiction. What emerged from that holding of opposites surprised me. I had failed to realize how non-dual the non-dual approach actually is. Here I was trying to find fault or at least futility with the law of attraction approach, when I realized that all of these law of attraction processes for changing the way you think and the way you feel are actually contributing to awakening to greater wholeness. It seems paradoxical, because if we are already whole and we just need to awaken to this, then there is no real point in trying to change ourselves. So why even bother? However, the law of attraction processes as well as any other form of psychological work is actually making us more prone to open up to wholeness and is thus perfectly compatible with a non-dual approach. Psychological work alone may keep you stuck in the realm of the personal if you become entranced by the constant quest for self improvement, however the psychological work is also what enables us to have a sufficiently strong foundation to even begin the process of awakening.

Interestingly, both the non-dual approach and the law of attraction approach ultimately seek to bring us back to greater wholeness and joy. The law of attraction work emphasizes changing the way you think so that you can feel better and by changing the way you think to experience better feeling thoughts. And then by experiencing better feeling thoughts you end up more connected and aligned with the broader perspective of who you truly are. In other words, by doing the work of feeling better you actually end up opening up to the wholeness of you you are. The non-dual work approaches this through spiritual practices that directly challenge the personal only perspective. And as the personal only perspective gets more and more challenged and makes more and more space for the impersonal, it brings people back to the wholeness of who they are through that route.

So does that mean that the difference is merely methodological? Yes and No. Both approaches end up in the long run bringing people back to wholeness. And at least from the perspective of the Abraham-Hicks material that is actually the goal. It's not about the stuff, it is about living a more happy, joyous life. And the vast majority of the techniques offered to do so are for the most part at the level of personality, which is very different from the non-dual way. There is however another very striking difference besides just the methodology and that is the audiences that these two topics attract. I would dare say that the majority of people attracted to law of attraction type material are drawn to it at least initially because they believe that it will enable them to have the fancy car, the wonderful house, the gorgeous mate and all these other things that they believe will make them feel better when they get them. In comparison though, people who are drawn to buddhism, zen, advaita and other non-dual spiritual paths are generally more inclined to be seeking enlightenment or some form of ultimate self-realization. And for some of these people, there may even be a certain aversion or disdain of material wealth, because they erroneously believe that having such things is not spiritual and that having them or even just desiring them is an impediment to self-realization. The way I look at things now, maybe the universe has opened up these seemingly very different approaches to returning to wholeness precisely because the one size fits all approach doesn't work. The world is a wonderfully messy place, so it makes sense that the business of returning to God would also be wonderfully messy. I would like to end this for now with an old Sufi proverb: "There are as many paths to god as there are souls on earth."
