Shepard Fairey spoke to the Evening Standard while painting his largest-ever mural, a 42-metre-high stencil encouraging free speech, at the London Pleasure Gardens, a huge new ?oasis of urban culture? which opens near City Airport this weekend.
?Bansky is an old friend, and the energy he has created around public art in London has affected the entire scene,? said the 42-year-old, who is the US?s most famous guerrilla painter.
?This is a great city for street art because it?s densely populated and a lot of people walk, so they can stumble across something, stop and look at it.?
Fairey said that the chance to work on the side wall of the derelict Millennium Mill at Pontoon Dock, visible to departing planes and Olympics visitors to the ExCel Centre, was a gift. But high winds and rain had made painting difficult. ?I?m from Southern California, so I?m spoiled,? he said.
The new art includes the image of wrestler Andre the Giant that has appeared in Fairey?s work since his earliest, illegal tagging campaigns in 1989 ? often alongside the word ?Obey?. ?I wanted to encourage people to question everything, their obedience to authority,? said Fairey. The father-of-two has been arrested 19 times, most recently in 2009, despite his unofficial association with Mr Obama.
Of his most famous design, Fairey said: ?I?m proud of the Obama image as a piece of grassroots activism that wasn?t commissioned by the campaign. I thought Obama would be a subversive delivery vehicle for a lot of progressive ideas. Of course I?m not going to do anything like that for Obama this time because you can?t replicate the optimism people had for him as an unknown quantity.?
The London Pleasure Gardens, which can host 35,000 people, opens on Saturday with the weekend-long Paradise Gardens Festival of free theatre, music and art, and a huge fireworks display.
The mostly open-air site also features a double-decker bus, two aeroplane nose-cones and several billboards decorated by street artists including Risk, Ron English and TrustoCorp.
Many of the US artists will be showing work at Black Rat Projects in Rivington Street, Shoreditch, from July 4, marking Independence Day.

Being a little richer in theory is not complicated. Just learn to spend less, and if not enough learning to earn some extra money. But we are not entirely rational beings, and we have to deal with our emotions and predispositions. Let?s talk about which would be the 7 major sins to a person seeking to improve their personal finances.
Lust
No need to think about sex. In personal finance, fantasizing about what you would do with more money, about what you could buy, and imagine rich is a form of lust. Do not waste time dreaming about how nice it would have more money. Leave that to those who waste your money playing the Euro Millions.

Gluttony
This is what happens when you get things too rushed. Those yearning for success can lead you to risk too much, for example by choosing investments with high returns (i.e., high risk), or putting up too much of your personal savings to invest with leverage strong.
Avarice
Money is not everything in life. Spend the savings, just think about which will be your next move to get some benefit not going to make you happier.
Laziness
Decisions put off until tomorrow that could be taken today to improve your economy (especially cut costs or find a new job), or dedicate yourself to doing only the part you like about the difficult things are significant risks. It is also a form of laziness think you can pay tomorrow what you cannot today and use credit.
Anger
Being angry is often the emotional response to the frustration of not getting what you want at any given time. Altered but no use at all, better relax, analyze what you did wrong and correct.
Envy
Envy and the need to show others an image of social success lead to catastrophes in personal finance. Focus on you, who you are and who you want to be. Define your goals in life and forget what you may think of others.
Pride
Never believe you?re right in everything. Good results have been achieved so far do not mean that you are going to get in the future. One thing is confidence in yourself (essential) and quite another pride. Listen to the opinions of others and learn. Humility often can save you a very wrong decision.
These are the 7 deadly sins for the investor who seeks to improve their personal financial situation. There is certainly more dangerous, but if you can hold off these temptations, you have a good chance of getting your financial goals.

Engineering Conferences International (ECI) is a global engineering conferences program, originally established in 1962, that provides opportunities for the exploration of problems and issues of concern to engineers and scientists from many disciplines.
The format of the weeklong research conference provides morning and late afternoon or evening sessions in which major presentations are made. Available time is included during the afternoons for ad hoc meetings, informal discussions, and/or recreation. This format is designed to enhance rapport among participants and promote dialogue on the development of the meeting. We believe that the conferences have been instrumental in generating ideas and disseminating information to a greater extent than is possible through more conventional forums.
All participants are expected both to attend the entire conference and to contribute actively to the discussions. The recording/photographing of lectures and presentations is forbidden. As ECI conferences take place in an informal atmosphere, casual clothing is the usual attire.

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) ? Dock workers unloaded stacked containers from a cargo ship that arrived in New Jersey from the Middle East after a Coast Guard inspection team heard knocking that suggested stowaways might be inside one of the boxes.
The 850-foot Ville D'Aquarius was met by law enforcement officials and more than a dozen ambulances when it docked early Wednesday at Port Newark, one of the nation's busiest ports. Large mechanical cranes began unloading containers from the ship.
By evening, officials had inspected more than 150 of the 200 containers authorities believe could be carrying people and no stowaways had been found. The search was to continue on Thursday. The ship has 2,000 containers altogether.
"If there are people down there, with no food and water for days, they're probably pretty desperate by now," said Drew Barry, of the Sandy Hook Pilots Association, who boarded the vessel about 20 miles offshore to help pilot it into port.
The Coast Guard team had boarded the ship outside New York Harbor early Wednesday as the ship prepared to dock, spokesman Charles Rowe said. The officers were knocking on a bulkhead, or partition, of the ship as a routine security check and heard knocks back, he said, but they couldn't pinpoint the source of the sound. The return knocks ended after about two hours, Rowe said.
The team followed protocol and didn't open containers at sea in order to control the situation, he said.
Shipping containers are steel boxes, usually 8 feet wide and 8- to 10-feet high and either 20- or 40-feet long, designed to withstand the rigors of the high seas and are strong enough to be stacked several high.
They normally can be opened only from the outside. There's hardly any ventilation.
Rowe said it was taking about eight minutes to check each container ? unloading it off the ship, opening it up and X-raying it if necessary.
The Department of Homeland Security, which was also involved in the investigation, said Wednesday night that its officers and agents were prepared to continue examining containers through the night.
The container ship, which a manifest said was carrying machine parts to Norfolk, Va., was loaded in India, Rowe said.
The ship began its voyage May 30 in the United Arab Emirates, then made one stop in Pakistan and two stops in India. Its last port before Newark was in Egypt on June 15.
Speaking at an unrelated news conference, Andrew McLees, special agent in charge of Homeland Security investigations for U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, said the ship's origin and itinerary prompted the initial search.
"The routing of the ship and the ports of call was what led to the actions," McLees said.
Michael Ward, the FBI's top official in New Jersey, said the response was appropriate given the port's vulnerability. The area is considered a prime potential target for terrorists.
"You're going to get a response like this any time you have these types of facts," Ward said. "It was an appropriate response which we did out of an abundance of caution."
Shipping companies are legally responsible for keeping stowaways off their vessels, said Frank Atcheson, a maritime lawyer based in North Bergen, N.J. When stowaways are found, the companies are liable not only for fines but also must pay to house the stowaways where they are found and for secure transportation back to where they originated.
Between January 1998 and Dec. 16, 2011, more than 13,000 stowaways were found in more than 4,000 incidents around the world, according to the International Maritime Organization.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Jose Hernandez worked in farm fields with his Mexican-immigrant parents before becoming an astronaut. Iraq War veteran Julius Melendez is the third generation of his Puerto Rican family to serve in the military. And Tony Cardenas, the youngest of 11 children of immigrant farmers from Jalisco, Mexico, has served in the California Assembly and on the Los Angeles City Council.
Next year, all of them could be coming to Congress.
The 2012 election is shaping up as a big one in the House for Hispanics. There are currently 29 in the House ? including a Pacific islands delegate and Puerto Rico's resident commissioner ? according to the Congressional Research Service. That number is virtually guaranteed to increase by at least three or four seats because of once-a-decade redistricting that's created new Hispanic-majority districts in California and Texas. On top of that, Hispanics could win more seats in New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada and Florida.
"It's a watershed election for the Latino community," said Rep. Raul Grivalja, D-Ariz. "Our ability to influence decisions is evident and present and our ability to motivate voters is critical."
Hispanics are the fastest-growing group in the United States, increasing in population by more than 15 million between 2000 and 2010, according to U.S. Census data. They make up more than 16 percent of the U.S. population, far more than their share of roughly 5 percent of the seats in the House.
In comparison, there are 44 blacks in the House, including two delegates, according to the CRS, a record number. Blacks comprise roughly 10 percent of the House, compared to about 12 percent of the U.S. population. There are 10 Asian-Americans in the House, according to the CRS, including two delegates, roughly 2 percent of the chamber compared to roughly 5 percent of the U.S. population.
Both parties say Hispanic candidates are pivotal in this year's race for control of the House.
Democrats, who need a net gain of 25 seats to take a majority, say Hispanic candidates could make up a fifth or more of that margin. Republicans, challenging in fewer districts because of their large current majority, have recruited strong Hispanic candidates for a handful of districts seen as opportunities to snatch Democratic seats.
The competition for Hispanic votes in congressional races ? whatever the backgrounds of the candidates they're voting for ? mirrors the presidential contest. While Hispanics as a group have historically favored Democrats, Republican Mitt Romney has indicated he will compete vigorously with President Barack Obama for their support.
Democrats say maximizing Hispanic turnout is a key to electoral success. Republicans, in turn, say chipping away at Democrats' margins with the group is crucial.
Obama injected fresh energy into the competition when he announced he was easing enforcement of immigration laws for hundreds of thousands of younger illegal immigrants and offering them a chance to stay in the U.S. and work. That is expected to motivate more Hispanic voters to turn out for Democrats in November.
California is expected to be the center of Hispanic increases in Congress. Democrats are running two Hispanic candidates likely to win in the fall: Cardenas, a Los Angeles City councilman, and Juan Vargas, a state senator and son of Mexican immigrants. Republican David Valadao, a state assemblyman and son of Portuguese immigrants, is likely to win a GOP-leaning district.
In competitive seats in California, both parties are running Hispanic candidates against incumbents who are not.
Hernandez, the former astronaut, is a Democrat challenging first-term GOP Rep. Jeff Dunham in the newly drawn 10th Congressional District. As a child Hernandez helped his parents in the field and went on to study engineering in college. He makes his roots a big part of his appeal to voters, telling the story of how he watched the Apollo 17 launch on TV and his father laid out how he could become an astronaut himself.
"I was able to rise from the fields of California and touch the sky on the space shuttle Discovery as an astronaut," he said when he announced his campaign last October.
Democrats also have high hopes for Raul Ruiz, a medical doctor who grew up in a trailer with his Mexican farmworker parents and has received three graduate degrees from Harvard. Ruiz is running against GOP Rep. Mary Bono Mack, who has been in Congress since 1998. Democrats say the seat will be competitive this fall.
For the GOP, a prominent Hispanic candidate, Abel Maldonado, California's former lieutenant governor, is one of its best chances to pick off an incumbent. Maldonado is running against endangered Democratic Rep. Lois Capps, who has seen her district turn more conservative with redistricting. Maldonado's campaign ads highlight his background ? his parents are Mexican immigrant farmers who eventually built their own farming business ? and show him standing in a strawberry field and talking about what he learned from his father.
In one ad, as the camera pans over California farmland, Maldonado says: "It's time to teach Washington the lessons we've learned growing up."
Hispanic candidates are figuring prominently in other states where the Hispanic population has grown quickly.
In New Mexico, Michelle Lujan Grisham is favored to take the state's 1st Congressional District, after Rep. Martin Heinrich decided to run for the Senate. In Nevada, State Assembly Speaker John Oceguera is taking on GOP Rep. Joe Heck in one of the Democrats' top targeted races. If she wins a crowded primary for Arizona's new 9th Congressional District, Leah Campos Schandlbauer, a former CIA agent, could give Republicans a prominent Hispanic on the ballot in what's likely to be a fiercely contested race.
In Florida, which has an August primary, Democrats have two Hispanic candidates ? businesswoman Gloria Romero Roses, who was born in Colombia, and lawyer Joe Garcia, a Cuban-American ? in the race to take on Republican Rep. David Rivera, a Cuban-American whom Democrats see as vulnerable. Republicans have two prominent Puerto Rican candidates vying to take on former Rep. Alan Grayson in Florida's Orlando-area 9th Congressional District: John "Q'' Quinones, a county commissioner and former state representative, and Melendez, the Iraq War veteran and a member of the local school board. Both are appealing to the district's sizable Hispanic population.
There has been one big disappointment for Hispanic growth in the House in 2012: Texas. It was poised to have the most new Hispanic members, with the state adding four new seats in 2012 thanks to large Hispanic growth. But at most two of the new seats will be represented by Hispanic lawmakers. The state is also losing two long-time Hispanic lawmakers, Rep. Charlie Gonzalez, who is retiring, and Rep. Silvestre Reyes, who lost a primary to a non-Hispanic opponent, though Gonzalez is likely to be replaced by Joaquin Castro, a state lawmaker, Harvard Law graduate and second-generation Mexican-American.
Gonzalez, the chairman of the House Hispanic Caucus, said he still believes Hispanic influence is on the rise in the House, and he noted more Hispanic candidates running in competitive districts in 2012.
"Our power will only increase as time goes on," said Gonzalez. "Because of demographics, as goes the future of the Latino family, so goes the future of the United States."

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603DN ($1,749 direct), geared toward businesses with massive printing needs, has the chops to churn out large numbers of pages at breakneck speed. Its sticker price is high, but its low running costs should make it an attractive investment for busy SMB and enterprise departments looking for a speedy, high-volume black-and-white printer.
The M603DN?s 62 page-per-minute (ppm) rated speed matches that of the HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603N ($1,499 direct, 4 stars) as the fastest of any printers we?ve reviewed. They both lived up to their blistering rated speeds, printing out our test suite in a near-record pace. A 275,000-page maximum monthly duty cycle (with a recommended monthly duty cycle of up to 20,000 pages), as well as substantial standard and optional paper capacity, pegs the M603 series for SMB or enterprise workgroups that print massive amounts of material.
The M603N measures 15.7 by 16.3 by 20 inches (HWD) and weighs 58 pounds. The front panel has a four-line monochrome LCD and some basic control buttons: Home, Help, Stop, and Back, plus a two-way rocker control with center button. To the right is a numeric keypad for entering PIN numbers for password-protected printing; below the panel is a port for a USB thumb drive.
The M603DN has a standard 600-sheet paper capacity, between a 500-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder, and has an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper built in. Additional paper-handling options are available to bring the paper capacity to a maximum of 3,600 sheets. Options include a 1,500-sheet input tray ($499 direct), a 500-sheet input tray ($299), a 400-sheet custom media cassette ($229 direct), a 75-sheet envelope feeder ($249), a 500-sheet stacker ($149), a 500-sheet stapler/stacker ($249), and a 500-sheet mailbox ($399).
The M603DN is the middle model of HP?s M603 series. The M603N lacks an automatic duplexer, while the M603xh ($2,399 direct) includes the duplexer while adding an additional 500-sheet paper tray plus an encrypted hard drive.
The M603N provides USB and Ethernet (including Gigabit), with optional WiFi. I tested it over an Ethernet connection with its driver installed on a PC running Windows Vista.
![]()
Printing Speed
I timed the M603DN on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at a blistering effective 14.5 pages per minute (ppm), a very good speed for its 62-page per minute rated speed that?s based on printing text documents without graphics or photos. (Our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content.) That?s statistically tied with the M603N?s 14.3 ppm, and slightly faster than the 13.4 ppm that the Editors? Choice HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M601DN ($899 direct, 4 stars)?rated at 45 ppm?turned in. The OKI B730DN ($1,299 direct, 4 stars), rated at 55 pages per minute, tested a bit slower still, at 12 ppm.
Output Quality
The M603DN?s output quality is fine for typical business needs. Its text was slightly below par for a laser, which is still very good, suitable for anything short of demanding desktop publishing applications that require very small fonts. Graphics were of average quality, good enough for internal business use. In a couple of illustrations the printer had trouble in differentiating between similar shades of gray, so I?d want to double-check the graphics before distributing them, say, as part of a report. Photo quality was average, good enough to print out recognizable images from files or Web pages, which is about all you can expect from a mono laser.
Other Issues
The M603DN has a very low cost per page (1.2 cents), the same as the M603N. The OKI B730DN?s cost per page is 1.4 cents, while the M601DN?s running costs are 1.7 cents per page. You pay much more up front for the M603DN, but for offices with the massive printing volumes for which it is intended, the cost savings can mount quickly.
The M603DN is pricey for a mono laser, but it lives up to the adage, ?you get what you pay for.? In its case, that includes sizzling speed, ample standard and optional paper capacity, a prodigious monthly duty cycle, output quality good enough for standard business uses, automatic duplexing, password-protected printing, and a very low cost per page. If you don?t need the duplexer, the M603N will save you $250.
The LED-based OKI B730DN has the same claimed maximum duty cycle as, and even greater standard paper capacity than, the M603DN. Like the M603DN, it offers secure printing and comes with an automatic duplexer. Its speed, although impressive, is lower than the M603DN?s. Its output quality doesn?t quite match that of the M603DN, but it?s still fine for standard business uses. The OKI sells for $500 less than the M603DN, but has slightly higher running costs, based on manufacturers? current costs and yields. (You can save about $20 per 10,000 pages printing with the M603DN.) Although the OKI B730DN is a very worthy printer, I?d give a clear edge to the M603DN.
The Editors? Choice M601DN, geared toward offices with lesser printing demands than the M603 models (its maximum monthly duty cycle is 175,000 pages), is a tad slower than the M603DN, lacks password-protected printing, and has a slightly higher cost per page, but comes in at a much lower sticker price. It?s a better deal for smaller workgroups with heavy though not exceptional printing volume.
The HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603DN, which straddles the line between an SMB and an enterprise printer, ?has what it takes to churn out humongous quantities of black-and-white pages, and its low running cost promises cost savings in time if you can get over the rather steep sticker price. It?s the best choice for offices or workgroups with exceptionally large monochrome printing needs looking for a high-end printer, and earns an Editors? Choice in that capacity.

Yesterday (June 26) marked the 49th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy's visit to Berlin, some 22 months after the erection of the Berlin Wall. Kennedy's visit to West Berlin, though symbolic sent an unequivocal message of support. Roughly 60 percent of West Berliners turned out to hear the young president from the United States.
Before Kennedy actually made it to the podium to speak, pandemonium had already reached a feverish pitch during the motorcade. Because the shadow of the Nazi regime was still covering Germany, Kennedy's reception and the raucous chants of "Kennedy, Kennedy, Kennedy" also caused some measure of discomfort. German Chancellor Konrad Adenauer said to Secretary of State Dean Rusk, "Does this mean Germany can one day have another Hitler?"
Standing proxy for the hopes of West Berliners, Kennedy said to the ecstatic crowd:
There are many people in the world who really don't understand, or say they don't, what is the great issue between the free world and the Communist world. Let them come to Berlin. There are some who say that Communism is the wave of the future. Let them come to Berlin. And there are some who say in Europe and elsewhere we can work with the Communists. Let them come to Berlin. And there are even a few who say that it is true that Communism is an evil system, but it permits us to make economic progress. Lass' sie nach Berlin kommen. Let them come to Berlin.
Kennedy then took a direct swipe at Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev, reminding all that the Wall was a reflection of his inability to address his emigrant problem and the inherent weakness of the Soviet system: "Freedom has many difficulties and democracy is not perfect, but we have never had to put a wall up to keep our people in, to prevent them from leaving us."
He concluded his remarks in the same manner that he opened. Kennedy began his address by saying: "Two thousand years ago the proudest boast was 'civis Romanus sum' (the Latin phrase that translates: I am a Roman citizen, implying, all the rights and privileges associated with the status of Roman citizenship.) Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is 'Ich bin ein Berliner.'"
He closed by saying: "All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin, and, therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words 'Ich bin ein Berliner.'"
It has been well documented that the rough translation of Kennedy's words were "I am a jelly doughnut." Kennedy should have said, "Ich bin Berliner," which translates "I am a Berliner." But anyone viewing a tape of the speech would clearly see, based on the reaction of the German people, they made the accurate translation. They heard Kennedy's words with their heart and desires. For that brief moment Kennedy's mangled German was fluent.
The speech in Berlin completed an amazing month of oratory for Kennedy. In volume two of American Speeches: Political Oratory from Abraham Lincoln to Bill Clinton, of the five speeches attributed to Kennedy, three were given in 1963. In addition to the "peace speech" at American University and the Berlin speech, Kennedy's address to the nation on June 11, 1963, is widely considered the most important speech on civil rights by a president since Abraham Lincoln.
As I discuss in my forthcoming book, the Cold War, civil rights, and Vietnam combined to make 1963 a year of hope and hostility. But 49 years ago, Kennedy made "Ich bin ein Berliner" a global euphemism for all who desired to be free.

With huge wildfires scorching the West, the US Forest Service chief says the aging and depleted fleet of air tankers is just one part of the firefighting mix. But he has secured extra aircraft for the season.
By Gloria Goodale,?Staff writer / June 25, 2012
As large fires scorch vast tracts of land from Alaska to Colorado and Arkansas, the debate over the nation?s fire-fighting preparedness?is also heating up.

The air tanker fleet tasked with the most dangerous mega-fire tasks ? think dropping tons of fire-retardant into remote and steep canyons?? is under?particular scrutiny. Pointing to the fleet?s decade-long decline?from some 44 tankers in 2002 to nine at the start of the 2012 fire season, one critic is calling the current situation an ?air tanker crisis.?
However Tom Tidwell, chief of the US Forest Service, one of four federal agencies charged with tackling fires and the one responsible for deploying the air tankers anywhere in the country, maintains that the state of preparedness is good, because the air tankers are only part of the overall mix of fire-fighting resources.
Mr. Tidwell points to some 300 helicopters and small planes that are also used, noting that?in the past decade, the mix?has shifted, with more?emphasis on the smaller craft. As a former firefighter, Tidwell says, ?the personnel on the ground really appreciate the helicopters because they can go places the large planes cannot.?
Nonetheless, he notes that?over the weekend, the?service sealed a deal with the US military to?deliver four tankers when needed. In addition, the Forest Service has assembled?eight other plane contracts, including several with the?Canadian government to bring the available tankers for this season to 21. Beyond that,?he points to additional?resources that have just been announced ? a contract for seven total?next-generation air tankers, three?to be delivered?by the?end of this year.
But those numbers don?t tell the whole story ? and they are too little, too late, says former wildland firefighter Bill Gabbert, founder of WildfireToday.com, a fire news blog. He points to numerous fatal crashes, two this year, attributable?in part?to aircraft age and metal fatigue.
?Eight of the nine planes in the core fleet today date back to the Korean War?era,? he points out, adding,??We are in a crisis.?
Tidwell suggests there is too much emphasis on the role of the air tanker in fire suppression, adding, ?there is this perception that tankers put out fires. But they don?t. Firefighters put out fires.?
