NASA's Cassini spacecraft has tracked the aftermath of a rare massive storm on Saturn. Data reveal record-setting disturbances in the planet's upper atmosphere long after the visible signs of the storm abated, in addition to an indication the storm was more forceful than scientists previously thought.
Data from Cassini's composite infrared spectrometer (CIRS) instrument revealed the storm's powerful discharge sent the temperature in Saturn's stratosphere soaring 150 degrees Fahrenheit (83 kelvins) above normal. At the same time, researchers at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md., detected a huge increase in the amount of ethylene gas, the origin of which is a mystery. Ethylene, an odorless, colorless gas, isn't typically observed on Saturn. On Earth, it is created by natural and man-made sources.
Goddard scientists describe the unprecedented belch of energy in a paper to be published in the Nov. 20 issue of the Astrophysical Journal.
"This temperature spike is so extreme it's almost unbelievable, especially in this part of Saturn's atmosphere, which typically is very stable," said Brigette Hesman, the study's lead author and a University of Maryland scientist who works at Goddard. "To get a temperature change of the same scale on Earth, you'd be going from the depths of winter in Fairbanks, Alaska, to the height of summer in the Mojave Desert."
First detected by Cassini in Saturn's northern hemisphere on Dec. 5, 2010, the storm grew so large that an equivalent storm on Earth would blanket most of North America from north to south and wrap around our planet many times. This type of giant disturbance on Saturn typically occurs every 30 Earth years, or once every Saturn year.
Not only was this the first storm of its kind to be studied by a spacecraft in orbit around the planet, but it was the first to be observed at thermal infrared wavelengths. Infrared data from CIRS allowed scientists to take the temperature of Saturn's atmosphere and to track phenomena that are invisible to the naked eye.
Temperature measurements by CIRS, first published in May 2011, revealed two unusual beacons of warmer-than-normal air shining brightly in the stratosphere. These indicated a massive release of energy into the atmosphere. After the visible signs of the storm started to fade, CIRS data revealed the two beacons had merged. The temperature of this combined air mass shot up to more than minus 64 degrees Fahrenheit (above 220 kelvins).
According to Hesman, the huge spike of ethylene generated at the same time peaked with 100 times more ethylene than scientists thought possible for Saturn. Goddard scientists confirmed the release of the gas using the Celeste spectrometer mounted on the McMath-Pierce Solar Telescope on Kitt Peak in Arizona.
The team still is exploring the origin of the ethylene, but has ruled out a large reservoir deep in the atmosphere.
"We've really never been able to see ethylene on Saturn before, so this was a complete surprise," said Goddard's Michael Flasar, the CIRS team lead.
A complementary paper led by Cassini team associate Leigh Fletcher of Oxford University, England, describes how the two stratospheric beacons merged to become the largest and hottest stratospheric vortex ever detected in our solar system. Initially, it was larger than Jupiter's Great Red Spot.
Their paper in the journal Icarus, which combines CIRS data with additional infrared images from other Earth-based telescopes, including NASA's Infrared Telescope Facility at Mauna Kea, Hawaii, also reports a powerful collar of clockwise winds -- encompassing a bizarre soup of gases -- around the vortex.
"These studies will give us new insight into some of the photochemical processes at work in the stratospheres of Saturn, other giants in our solar system, and beyond," said Scott Edgington, Cassini deputy project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif.

When I became pregnant with Joey, Anneliese was just under a year old. I knew she couldn?t possibly understand what was really happening, and what was going to change with our family in just a few months, but I did my best to prepare her for his arrival. Considering that upon seeing him the first time, Anneliese greeted him with an affectionate, ?My baby!? and sweet kisses, I think I managed to do a good job preparing her. Of course, some of that is just her personality, but that?s a factor none of us can control.
How to prepare your toddler for a new baby arriving soon
1. Babies, Everywhere!
Start early with exposing your toddler to younger babies. Go to playdates, library story time, or other activities where they?ll be present. If you have friends with young babies, that?s even better! Ask if you can hold the baby for a few minutes, and let your toddler see that even if you hold another child, you?ll always cuddle your big toddler again afterward.
Teach ?gentle hands? and ?soft touches? from the start. Welcome your toddler to gently touch the baby (if it?s okay with the baby?s parents) in a sweet way, supervising closely. Use positive language to guide her to proper touch. Examples are:
?Very sweet hands. You?re being very gentle with this baby.?
?Oh, hitting like that can hurt a little tiny baby. Let?s hold his hand gently instead, like this.?
?Can you help me find his toes? Let?s count his toes.?
?You are being so careful with this little baby. He likes when you touch his cheek. See him smile??
If you don?t have ?access? (ha!) to babies in order to practice these skills, pets or baby dolls act as good stand-ins.
2. A book is worth? a thousand words?
Well that doesn?t make as much sense as I thought it would. But really, children?s books are super-helpful. Any books that include babies in them can spark discussion (even if at this young age it?s mostly one-sided). Point out how the parent in the book is holding the baby, or the types of toys babies like to play with.
Some books are geared specifically toward preparing an older child for a baby to join the family. Two that I absolutely love are:
My New Baby, which has very simple text, bright pictures, and can serve as a discussion-starter. Despite the baby being carried in a car seat on the cover (which deterred me from the book for a while), the family in the book is definitely more hands-on. The mother breastfeeds the baby, everyone snuggles together in the big bed in the morning, and when they go for a walk, the baby is worn in a soft structured baby carrier. Anneliese still LOVES this book.
What Baby Needs, which I thought might be a little complicated for a one year old to grasp at times, but over the last year of reading it frequently (Anneliese still requests it often, and notices when things in our day are ?Like Baby Needs!!!?), it has really sunk in. This is another attachment-oriented family. It explains why babies must nurse so often, or why they might take bottles of expressed milk, shows babywearing, running errands, the baby sleeping in a cosleeper beside the parents? bed, playing as a family, and the older children playing with Daddy without the baby around. At the end, it says, ?Soon the baby will hold your hand, smile at you, sit up, and play!? Anneliese loves to hold Joey?s hand, and will tell him, ?Sit up!? She can?t wait to play with him more when he gets bigger, and she knows it?s coming.
3. Establishing Ownership
I had always told Anneliese that certain toys belong to the dog, because I didn?t want her playing with gross slobbery toys. That backfired in a way, because then she would pick up the toys all the time, to bring them to Zora. But I learned that she really understood the concept of ownership. If I said, ?That belongs to Daddy.? (for a tool, a pen, his phone, whatever) she would bring it to him, or leave it alone.
So when I started preparing for our new baby, I would tell her, ?This bed (cosleeper) belongs to Joseph. When Joseph comes out of my belly, he can sleep here.? Or, ?This toy is for Joseph when he can hold things. You can play with it now, but when he wants to play with it, you can put it in his hand.?
These things weren?t off limits by any means, but from the beginning, I made sure she knew that they weren?t her things. She has plenty of toys and belongings, so I could always direct her to something that WAS hers too.
If you are going to be passing things down from the toddler to the baby, do so well in advance. If your toddler is in a crib, and your baby will sleep in it, for example, transitioning at 8.5 months through your pregnancy is going to make the toddler associate ?losing? her property with the baby?s arrival. Instead, shop for a ?big bed? as early on as you?d like, celebrate the changes and your older child?s milestone without linking it to anything about the baby. Then, later, you can say, ?You slept in this crib when YOU were a baby! Now it belongs to the new baby for HIM to sleep in!?
4. Be Patient
Remember, your family is going through some BIG changes. You might be tired, or unable to play in the same ways, and the air in the house FEELS different with a new baby on the way. Pets can sense it, and so can other kids.
In the days when birth is approaching, and the days afterward, it can be easy to switch to a mindset of ?managing? your toddler. Beware of this. Of course it wouldn?t be a conscious decision, but it would be easy to accidentally say something like, ?Let me feed the baby please. Go play over there.? Instead, try something like, ?The baby is in my arms having some milk. Why don?t you sit in Daddy?s lap so he can read us all a story??
Make sure your husband or partner is on board with this attitude too. Instead of, ?Let?s let Mommy have quiet time with the baby,? focus on the actual activity the toddler will be doing, ?Why don?t we go play with sidewalk chalk outside for a while??
5. No Baby Blame
In a related category, be sure not to place blame on the baby. Saying things like, ?Mommy is very tired right now because the baby woke up 4 times last night? so we can?t play that game,? or, ?We have to stay home from the park right now because the baby is about to take a nap,? or ?We have to go home now because the baby is getting cranky.? Remove the baby from the equation, OR present the baby in a positive light or with a positive association.
Try, ?Let?s color these pictures right now. I?m a bit too sleepy for playing tag,? or, ?When the baby wakes up from his nap, then we can go to the park! Yay!? or, ?It?s time to go home now. What toys will you play with when we get there??
6. A Special Gift
A lot of families will wrap up a special gift, to be given to the older child ?from the baby? when the baby is born. I originally got a sweet baby doll for Anneliese to have when Joey was born, but ended up giving it to her far in advance. But I love the idea of a gift from the baby to the other siblings, like a peace offering almost.
Even if you don?t do that exactly, it?s nice to keep the older kids in mind when the baby seems to be getting all of the attention. If you go out and buy new clothes for the baby, maybe let the toddler pick out a new book to take home. This doesn?t have to be excessive, every shopping trip, or expensive. Just remember that your older child wants to feel remembered, included, and important.
7. Stay Flexible
There isn?t any one proven formula for preparing EVERY toddler for EVERY baby. Everyone is different, and that includes the littlest people. So stay flexible, be prepared to change your game plan, and be aware of how your actions and words affect the smallest members of your family.
This is such an exciting time, and hopefully it will be one that EVERY person in your household can look back on fondly later.

Yahoo has a lot of cash, and everyone is writing that Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer is going to spend it soon.?
But what's actually going on?
Yahoo has ?approximately $2 billion in cash and securities it can easily sell, and another $600 million or so coming in from the sale of a portion of its Asian assets. It could quickly get its hands on a couple billion more if it was willing to sell some of its stake in Yahoo Japan for cheap.
Over the weekend, Reuters reported that the new Yahoo CEO has shown interest in buying OpenTable, an app for making restaurant reservations, and ad-tech companies PubMatic, Turn, and Millennial Media. It said that low-level negotiations had begun between Yahoo and a company called Caterva.
Previously, Kara Swisher of AllThingsD reported that Mayer is looking particularly closely at ad tech companies AppNexus, Mediaocean, and?Criteo, as well as PubMatic.
Another source in the ad scene literally called us to say "Blue Horseshoe likes Criteo" ? a reference to a scene?from the movie "Wall Street"where a banker calls a reporter to tip him off about a coming acquisition.
So what's actually going on?
Yahoo?is likely to buy something in the ad-tech space. Mayer chose not to sell Yahoo's ad-tech business. She plans to invest in it. There are going to be purchases, a source tells us. ?"Will there be big deals? Yes. Will they be crazy prices? No."
For now, though Mayer is just doing homework.?A senior executive at one of the the many companies listed above told us that yes, his company has talked to Yahoo about what it does and how it fits into the competitive landscape. But this source described the conversations not as negotiations, but as part of Mayer's effort to better understand the ad-tech world she wants Yahoo to dominate. Mayer may have worked at Google, but she was never involved in the advertising side of its business, so this is all very new to her and she knows she needs an education. This source wasn't ignorant to the fact that these kinds of conversations can lead to acquisitions, however.?
Mayer isn't going to rush anything.?Mayer only hired someone to run Yahoo's advertising business last week; new COO Henrique De Castro. And because of visa issues, he can't start for a month. Nothing is happening too soon.
People are pumping the value of their companies.?"[Criteo president] Greg Coleman is telling everyone he talks to that he met with Marissa," says a source close to Yahoo. "She and Coleman have not met four times," says this source, debunking one rumor we'd heard.
The OpenTable idea is laughable ? literally.?Late yesterday, a source familiar with Yahoo's plans called us to say that Reuters' story on Mayer wanting to buy OpenTable "won the prize for most hilarious thing written all weekend." So yeah, that deal seems unlikely.
Yahoo could be a "buyer of last resort."?In the past couple years, a number of fast-growing tech companies ? including Demand Media, Pandora, Groupon, and Zynga ? hit the public markets at huge valuations only to see those valuations corrected to much lower levels today. There are some late-stage private companies in a similar position; LivingSocial is not worth as much as it once was. Spotify and AppNexus face challenges too. Among this handful of companies, there are a few good businesses that were simply overvalued by late-stage private investors. A source tells us part of Mayer's plan is to have Yahoo in a position where it could scoop up one or two of them at reasonable prices. Imagine Yahoo buying Zynga for a couple hundred million dollars, for example.?Says this source: "Yahoo could be buyer of last resort.?A lot of the businesses are going to come by."

This post-PC era we've embarked on sure seems to have a lot of PCs in it.
That's what I think every time I'm in a shared space where people do work--coffeehouses, airports, co-working offices, and so forth. Take the coffee joint I visit a couple of times a week. Unlike some spots, people seem to go here to?work. Good luck finding a seat if you arrive much after 9 on a weekday morning. They're occupied by salespeople, developers, designers, entrepreneurs, students, and?navel-gazing writers. It strikes me as a fairly representative sample of the modern mobile workforce. And although I'm generalizing, they're all using laptops. (Plenty of the laptops are Macs, but that's a different story.)

Apple is largely expected to unveil a new, smaller iPad tomorrow, a move one analyst predicts could further stifle an already struggling PC market.
Apple's new tablet, presumably called the iPad mini, will eat into sales of traditional notebook and desktop PCs, fueling a trend already put into motion by Apple's larger iPads and other, competing tablets, according to a research note from J.P. Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz.
"In our view, the iPad mini stands to target price-sensitive users and the e-reader crowd," Moskowitz wrote in the note, according to CNET. "Given the global economic uncertainty, we think price-sensitive users could gravitate toward an iPad mini instead of making a PC purchase."
Reports of a smaller-size iPad have been swirling for months, with Apple finally giving word of an Oct. 23 launch event last week. The new tablet is expected to tout a 7.85-inch display, downsized from the 9.5-inch display used in the three prior-generation iPads.
It's also largely anticipated to be thinner, but slightly more lower end than other iPads in terms of specs, lacking Apple's next-generation retina display and supporting only Wi-Fi, rather than 3G or 4G networks.
That said, Moskowitz predicts that these more midrange specs will move the new tablet to a lower price point than its predecessors.
"Our research indicates that the smaller size, absence of retina display, and less storage capacity underpin the base model's potential price point of $US249," he said.
The iPad mini's more mainstream price point, in addition to consumers generally refreshing their smartphone and tablets more frequently than their PCs, will only further sway buyers toward the new tablet, Moskowtiz continued.
If the iPad mini does, in fact, lure consumers away from more traditional PC purchases, it will deal a blow to an already weakening global PC market. Gartner reported this month that 87.5 million PCs shipped in the third quarter, marking a hefty 8.3 percent decline compared with same quarter last year.
The drop was attributed to a weak global economy, coupled with the fact that many consumers are reserving their PC purchases for those running Microsoft's upcoming Windows 8 OS, set to launch on Oct. 26.

Meditation as a practice is considered to have begun over 6000 years ago, and is a practice that takes many varieties of form in the present. Some meditation techniques involve focussing on the breath, such as Vipassna , while other practices advocate chanting of a mantra such as Om to focus the mind and keep it in the present.
These meditation practices are passive and take a lot of practice, although the benefits of mastering these specific types of meditation are long lasting and profound. Other types of meditation are more activity based ? my sister meditates every day while washing dishes at the kitchen sink, as she allows her mind to de-focus and relax and finds this very soothing. Alan Leshner is worried. It seems scientists are having a hard time getting the public to understand science, and since ?Public understanding of science ? contributes to the extent of support for scientific research,? something must be done.
Leshner, CEO of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and Executive Publisher of its flagship publication, Science, wrote in a recent editorial, ?There is no shortage of topics where policy-makers or other members of the public seem to persistently misunderstand, misrepresent, or disregard the underlying science: climate change, genetically modified foods, vaccines, or evolution, among others.?
Well, I guess two out of four isn?t too bad. I imagine his and my understandings of GMO and vaccines are reasonably alike. But on climate change and (naturalistic macro-) evolution (not to oversimplify and distort), I suspect his conclusions and mine differ dramatically?and I have a feeling that, in question-begging style, he assumes that my conclusions are wrong and his are right, and what?s needed is for him and other scientists to help me understand the science better.
Trouble is (focusing here just on climate change), the better I?ve understood the science on climate change (having read over 40 books on the science and over 30 on the economics, and scores of major papers and thousands and thousands of articles on each), the more convinced I?ve become that catastrophic anthropogenic global warming (CAGW) is false.
In fact, a careful scientific survey found that the more people know about the science, the less likely they are to believe in CAGW.
It seems likely, therefore, that Leshner will be disappointed in the results if scientists do become any better at communicating the science of climate change.
But a careful reading of his editorial suggests that that?s not what he?s really after anyway. After decrying scientists? ineffectiveness at enlightening the public about the science of climate change, he writes,
Valuable studies have been carried out to discover what determines public attitudes toward science and technology, and some ? point to an individual?s ideological views or cultural identity as having greater influence ? than an understanding of the facts. Often, simply increasing public knowledge about an issue will not move the debate ?. Instead, the way an issue is framed can have a larger effect on people?s views. As a case in point, many people will give more credit to the scientific claims about climate change when the issue is cast as a technological challenge than as a regulatory problem.
(I.e., with regard to that last sentence, if we beg the question of the reality of CAGW and just present people with the technological challenge of how to deal with it, we can avoid the problem of convincing them of its reality in the first place.)
It appears that what Leshner is really after is not better public understanding of science but particular public opinions about climate change and that he would be content to see scientists turn from facts to ideology, cultural identity, and framing to move public opinion on global warming?a dangerous but not uncommon view in our postmodern times, even in the science community, as I discussed in ?Wanted for Premeditated Murder: How Post-Normal Science Stabbed Real Science in the Back on the Way to the Illusion of ?Scientific Consensus? on Global Warming.?
That this would indeed satisfy Leshner his very next sentences confirm:
Science is complicated and often jargon-laden, so scientists may need help from a ?translator? to help tell a story simply and cogently. In doing so, the gist of the message is what matters. Here there is a lesson to be learned from antiscience [sic?note the question begging] forces, who regularly oversimplify science in very effective ways, even when distorting it.
Noting that ?people care primarily about things that affect them personally or locally,? he adds, ?thus, a useful approach is to determine what matters to a specific audience and seek a way to make the message relevant to them.?
Yes. Like telling kids who like furry polar bears that global warming is driving them extinct; or people on low-lying islands and seacoasts that global warming is driving sea levels upward faster than ever; or biodiversity champions that global warming threatens to drive half the world?s species extinct; or allergy-prone people that global warming?s cause, rising CO2, will cause the pollen that irritates them to multiply (to mention just four such tactics)?when the first three are false and the last is offset by the fact that pretty much all plants will grow better, meaning food will be cheaper.
The fact is, in my constant reading and conversations, I?ve found it far more common for CAGW true believers than critics to oversimplify and even distort the science. It?s the true believers who so readily resort to the claim, ?Look, it?s basic physics. Greenhouse gases warm the planet, CO2 is a greenhouse gas, so more CO2 means more warmth.? They?re the ones who don?t like to get into the weeds of quantifying ?climate sensitivity,? CO2?s logarithmic warming curve, the sign and magnitude of climate feedbacks, the multiple natural drivers of climate, whether and how much local land use change (especially urbanization) distorts ?global? temperature readings, or any number of pesky details that falsify their intuitively sensible but false conclusion. They?ll discuss them, reluctantly, if pressed, but only then.
?Public understanding and support of science and technology have never been more important, but also never more tenuous,? Leshner says. Perhaps he?s right about the support, but I have a hunch public support for ?science? (in this context, code for global warming alarmism) is tenuous precisely because public understanding of science is growing?thanks to ?climate skeptics.?

KUWAIT (Reuters) - Opposition groups in Kuwait say they will boycott December 1 parliamentary elections, calling changes to the voting system announced by the government on Saturday a "coup against the constitution".
Kuwait has been torn by a power struggle between the government, controlled by the ruling Al-Sabah family, and the elected parliament. The turmoil has blocked development plans and paralyzed the political system.
The Kuwaiti government, at an extraordinary meeting in Kuwait city of Saturday, ordered elections to held on December 1, and decided to amended the election law to allow each voter to choose only one candidate instead of four.
The opposition, including Islamists, liberals and tribal figures who won a majority in the 50-seat parliament in the last election in February, rejected the changes and called for a protest march on Sunday, said Ahmed al-Dayen, an opposition politician.
Kuwait's oil wealth and a generous welfare state have helped it avoid the "Arab Spring" protests that forced out leaders elsewhere in the region. But there have been regular demonstrations in the country since last year.
Opposition leaders, meeting at a guest house owned by former parliament speaker Ahmed al-Saadoun, blamed the government for the political crisis and warned it was driving the country towards "autocratic rule".
"We call on the proud and free people of Kuwait to ... boycott the upcoming election, both by (refraining) from running in it or casting ballots," a statement after the meeting said.
It asked Kuwaitis to join a protest march on Sunday, and warned the interior minister against committing "aggression" against it. "We will hold him personally responsible for that," the statement said.
Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, Kuwait's emir, dissolved parliament on October 7, and under Kuwait's constitution elections are supposed to be held within 60 days.
It was the sixth dissolution of parliament since early 2006 in the oil-rich state, an ally of the United States.
RECURRING CRISIS
Sheikh Sabah, in a televised speech on Friday night, instructed the government to change the election law in what he said was a move to stem recurring crisis. He also said the constitutional court had issued a ruling that allowed for any necessary changes to be made to the country's electoral system.
Kuwaiti authorities arrested two opposition politicians on Thursday and interrogated a third after they made comments seen as criticizing the emir.
The former members of parliament spoke at an opposition-led rally of about 5,000 people on Monday, at which Kuwaitis later clashed with riot police close to parliament.
The arrests have prompted protests in Kuwait, including one late on Friday, when some 1,000 people had gathered in the centre of the capital to demand the release of the detainees.
The events prompted the Al-Sabah family to issue a rare statement on Thursday calling for obedience to the emir.
The Al-Sabah dynasty has ruled Kuwait for more than 250 years. The 83-year-old emir has led the country since 2006.
Although Kuwait allows more freedom of speech than some of its fellow Gulf states, the emir is seen as untouchable and is referred to as "immune and inviolable" in the constitution.
Sheikh Sabah warned in his speech on Friday the recent political turmoil in Kuwait could lead to "strife that could be about to erupt and destroy our unity, disfigure our identity and tear apart our society into fragmented groups".
He said he had instructed the government to establish a national electoral committee and to organize election campaigns "to guarantee the integrity of the electoral process."

NEW YORK (AP) ? Though Barack Obama and Mitt Romney rarely tackle the topic of abortion head-on, the void is being filled by rival advocacy groups targeting swing states with ads depicting one or the other candidate as an extremist in his stance on the divisive issue.
Obama, according to the National Right to Life Committee, is "the most pro-abortion president this country has ever seen." Another anti-abortion group, the Susan B. Anthony List, is running anti-Obama TV ads titled "Abortion Radical."
From the other side, groups supporting legal access to abortion, as well as the Obama campaign itself, depict Romney and his running mate, Rep. Paul Ryan, as eager to ban most abortions as part of a Republican "war on women." The GOP ticket "is extremely dangerous to women's health," says Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL Pro-Choice America.
Numerous polls indicate that abortion and other hot-button social issues aren't top priorities for most Americans as they worry about jobs and health care. Yet abortion is a visceral subject for some voters ? and the extent to which they turn out to vote, and perhaps sway wavering acquaintances, could make a difference in pivotal swing states.
There's extra intensity this year because Obama and Romney ? reflecting their party platforms ? are so polarized in regard to abortion.
Obama believes decisions about abortion should be left to women and their doctors. He affirmed this outlook during his acceptance speech at the Democratic convention, where the prime-time speakers included Keenan and Cecile Richards, president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America.
Romney opposes abortion except in cases of rape, incest and threat to the mother's life, and says the Supreme Court should repeal the 1973 Roe v. Wade decision that established a nationwide right to abortion. He also would end federal aid to Planned Parenthood, which is a major provider of abortion and contraception.
"There are such sharp differences between the two candidates, it's not surprising the advocacy groups are so engaged," said Mark Rozell, a political science professor at George Mason University in the swing state of Virginia. "They think other voters must feel the same way."
Planned Parenthood, through its political action affiliates, has spent more on this election than any in the past ? more than $12 million, with about half the money going for TV ads in Florida, Virginia, Ohio and other battleground states.
Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of the Planned Parenthood Action Fund, said a large chunk of the funds had been donated by new contributors eager to fight back against Republican efforts to restrict abortion at the state and federal level.
"People have woken up and said, 'Not only are they serious, but they're close to imposing their will on the women of America,'" Laguens said.
Among the biggest spenders on the anti-abortion side is the Susan B. Anthony List. Along with its political action committees, it has reported more than $3 million in expenditures, including TV ads in Ohio, Virginia, Florida and Colorado.
The group's president, Marjorie Dannenfelser, said the ads seek to depict Obama as an extremist in regard to abortion and to woo undecided, socially conservative Democrats, including Hispanics.
"It's hard to argue that the 'war on women' theme has stuck," Dannenfelser said. "The gender gap has closed since the first debate, and the women's vote is the most fluid I've seen."
Some of the swing states experienced controversies earlier this year that put a spotlight on abortion even before the presidential race heated up.
In Ohio, the Legislature held hearings on a bill that would impose the nation's most severe abortion restrictions, outlawing most abortions after the first detectable fetal heartbeat, which can be as early as six weeks into pregnancy. The bill stalled, but its supporters hope to revive it after the election.
Janet Folger Porter, president of the conservative advocacy group Faith2Action, is a leading backer of the so-called "heartbeat bill" and also released a video this month denouncing Obama.
"You can question where Gov. Romney stands, but there's no question where President Obama stands on life," says Porter, depicting Obama's stance as "pro-death."
Kellie Copeland, executive director of NARAL's Ohio affiliate, said debate over the heartbeat bill raised voter awareness of abortion-related issues.
"This is really on a lot of Ohioans' minds," she said. "They want to know where the candidates stand."
The issue also is figuring in Ohio's Senate race, with Democratic incumbent Sherrod Brown, a firm supporter of legal access to abortion, and Republican challenger Josh Mandel, an advocate of outlawing it.
In Virginia, there was a surge of protests earlier this year when the Republican-controlled Legislature passed a bill requiring women to undergo pre-abortion sonograms. Initially, it mandated a vaginally invasive procedure, drawing charges from female Democratic legislators that it amounted to "state mandated rape."
The provision was removed at Republican Gov. Bob McDonnell's urging after the bill was mocked on national TV comedy shows. But the controversy had staying power ? a Democratic legislative candidate in North Carolina has run a TV ad in which she brandishes a transvaginal wand in an effort to capitalize on the anti-abortion views of her GOP opponent.
Abortion also has been a prominent issue in Missouri's Senate race since Republican candidate Todd Akin ? a foe of abortion ? remarked in August that women's bodies have ways of avoiding pregnancy in instances of "legitimate rape." He later called the comment a mistake, but Democratic incumbent Claire McCaskill has aired anti-Akin ads featuring testimonials from women who said they were raped, including one who describes herself as a "pro-life" Republican.
Just this week, abortion flared as an issue in an Illinois congressional race pitting Republican incumbent Joe Walsh against Democrat Tammy Duckworth. Walsh asserted Thursday that abortions are never necessary to save the life of a woman because of scientific advances, and said "health of the mother has become a tool for abortions any time under any reason."
Medical experts responded quickly, saying abortions are sometimes necessary to save a mother's life. The American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists issued what it called an "unequivocal" message to politicians: "Get out of our exam rooms."
Rozell, the George Mason professor, said the abortion debate could play a crucial role in the election even as the economy remains the paramount concern.
"The social issues do matter to a significant portion of voters, especially certain swing voters who might see a candidate's position on abortion as a marker," Rozell said. "Can they trust this candidate to govern responsibly, or is he beholden to an extreme element in his political party?"
He said Romney faces a tricky balancing act as he tries to woo middle-of-the road women without antagonizing religious conservatives who already are wary because Romney supported abortion rights in the past.
Last week, Romney told The Des Moines Register's editorial board that there wasn't any abortion-related legislation he planned to pursue as president. A spokeswoman quickly clarified his remark, and Romney told reporters: "I'll be a pro-life president."
This week, Romney's campaign released a TV ad suggesting the candidate believes abortion "should be an option" in certain cases.
In the ad, a woman says she'd heard Romney's position on abortion and birth control "seemed a bit extreme." She says she'd learned Romney doesn't oppose contraception and believes abortion should be available in cases of rape, incest or when the mother's life is at stake.
Dawn Laguens of Planned Parenthood said the ad was "designed to deceive women."
"The Romney team knows that Mitt Romney's real agenda for women's health is deeply unpopular ? ending safe and legal abortion, ending Planned Parenthood's preventive care that millions of people rely on," she said.

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - The popular supplement saw palmetto may be safe for men with urinary symptoms, a new study finds - but whether it actually works is a whole other matter.
Saw palmetto is a fruit extract that some men take for the symptoms of an enlarged prostate - like difficulty urinating, urine leakage or having to get up repeatedly at night for a trip to the bathroom.
The supplement is popular, despite a lack of evidence that it works. Two recent clinical trials found that saw palmetto was no more effective than sugar pills for men with an enlarged prostate, also known as benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).
Still, with the supplement readily available over the counter, many men are likely to keep using it, according to Dr. Andrew L. Avins, a research scientist at Northern California Kaiser Permanente in Oakland.
"Since it's a dietary supplement, it can still be sold without evidence of efficacy," Avins noted in an interview. "And from past studies, we know that even without evidence, many people continue to take supplements based on what they believe."
So it's important to see whether there's a risk of any serious side effects, Avins said.
For their study, he and his colleagues looked at data from one of the clinical trials that tested saw palmetto for BPH.
The original study was a U.S. government-sponsored trial where 369 men with BPH were randomly assigned to take saw palmetto capsules or a placebo for 18 months.
Researchers found that urinary symptoms tended to improve, on average - but the benefit was no greater with saw palmetto than with the placebo.
On the positive side, Avins's team found that the risk of side effects seemed no bigger with the supplement either.
The most common complaints included upset stomach, muscle soreness and respiratory infections, and men in the supplement and placebo groups had the same number of complaints -- about three, on average.
And in the end, only a handful of those symptoms were considered to be related to the study itself, Avins's team reports in the Journal of Urology.
Still, that doesn't necessarily mean the supplement is risk-free, Avins cautioned.
"We can only talk about the use of saw palmetto at these doses, over 18 months," he said. (Men in the trial took anywhere from 320 to 960 milligrams of saw palmetto per day.)
"We can't address what happens when men take it for years," Avins said.
There's also little known about whether saw palmetto might interact with any medications a man might be taking.
Then, of course, there's the other question of whether there's any benefit to gain from using saw palmetto.
"On average," Avins said, "it doesn't appear any better than a placebo."
But, he added, if a man actually feels better from using saw palmetto - even via the "placebo effect" - he might think it's a worthwhile investment (at around $11 for 90 320-mg pills).
Avins stressed, however, that men should talk to their doctors about using any supplements. One reason is to help avoid any potential interactions with the prescription drugs they may be taking.
But another reason is to make sure you know about all the options for treating symptoms of an enlarged prostate.
"This is a condition where good conventional options do exist," Avins said.
Prescription medications include so-called Alpha-1 blockers such as doxazosin (Cardura) and prazosin (Minipress), tamsulosin (Flomax) and terazosin (Hytrin). Hormonal treatments include finasteride (Propecia, Proscar) and dutasteride (Avodart).
For some men, surgery may be recommended.
There are also some simple, no-cost steps men can take. Limiting fluids before bed, and cutting out caffeine and alcohol, can be helpful.
