5 Reasons to get excited about real estate investing again ? Real ...

business_law.jpg

Remember when real estate investing was the in thing? Back then, there were two kinds of people. Those who invested in real estate and those who wish they were investing in real estate. Back in the day, there were as many articles about real estate investing as there were about Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, and Lindsey Lohan combined. Real estate was the water cooler conversation, especially since Seinfeld has been long off the air. If you could not buy real estate, you could still dream, and make no mistake about it, it was the American dream. Many people still think it is. And mortgages, if you could fog up a mirror while breathing, you qualified. Yes, not too long ago, real estate was the hot topic, the in thing, an ideal retirement vehicle, and the way to become wealthy. In the past 4 years or so, it has fallen out of favor for most of us. Fortunes have been lost, time has been seemingly wasted, and we all learned a lesson we will never forget. Many people have washed their hands of ever investing in real estate again. They have been burned once, and never want to be burned like that again. Some people don?t believe it will ever come back, and if it does, it won?t reach the high point where it once was. Yes, real estate investing has certainly made an impact on many people. For those who still have some hope and faith left for real estate, there are very good reasons to want to invest again. Here are 5 reasons to get excited about investing in real estate again: 1. We are at the bottom of the real estate market. Each location is unique; one area may be on an upswing, while another location may be suffering. Overall, most would agree that our country has gone through a rough time economically, and the declining real estate market and mortgage crisis was the main reason behind this depressive time. There are very good indicators that we are at the bo ttom. Foreclosures have been slowing up, sales have been rising up, and some locations claim to not have enough inventory. After we are out from the bottom, we will know we were at the bottom.2. There is less competition. Sales are brisk in some areas, but it is still considered a buyer?s market. Many people would like to buy and take advantage of the good deals, but do not have the money, or cannot get a mortgage. As these buyers come out of the woodwork, prices will start to move up.3. Sellers are truly motivated. Many sellers do not want to sell in this depressed market, but they have limited choices. Many sellers are selling at prices below what they paid for the property. This market is ripe with motivated sellers.4. The term short sale is now part of Americana, just like Watergate, Monica Lewinsky, and tsunami. Foreclosures have been rampant, and some banks are now being reasonable and making smart decisions for this particular market. The short sale purchasers of toda y will spend their wonderful retirement bragging about the great real estate deal they made. 5. Our country is deeply in debt, and each day, sinks even further into a hole we can only hope to one day crawl out of. Most of us will not live to see the day our country is out of debt. One day, the eggroll may replace the hot dog, and the fortune cookie may replace the apple pie. This certainly is not something we look forward to. We cannot control what government does; only try to vote for the right politicians. Because of all of this debt our country owes, it is only inevitable that taxes will be increased. That is one very important reason to have real estate investing as part of your financial plan. Besides all of the wonderful benefits that real estate has to offer, being able to write off part of your income taxes is something that you will come to appreciate more each day. There will come a time when more people will realize that they need real estate to stem the rising co st of taxes, and that will cause properties to appreciate even more. So, what are you waiting for, 5 more reasons? Remember to always be an informed real estate investor.

(AP) ? One day CIA Director David Petraeus was sending out signals he'd like to stay on for President Barack Obama's second term. The next he was hurrying to the White House to offer his resignation and remorse over an extramarital affair. In rapid succession, other characters have emerged in North Carolina, Florida and Afghanistan with story lines that resemble the latest installment of "Real Housewives."

And the scandal's become so complicated you need a scorecard to keep track:

___

DAVID PETRAEUS

A highly decorated four-star Army general lauded for his leadership of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, Petraeus, 60, moved into the civilian world to become CIA director in September 2011. He shocked official Washington on Friday by admitting an extramarital affair with his biographer and resigning his spymaster post.

___

PAULA BROADWELL

The other woman. Now a 40-year-old author and married mom of two young children, she was a West Point-educated Army reservist and graduate student when she met Petraeus at Harvard in 2006. She later embarked on a case study on his leadership of the Iraq War. After he took the helm in Afghanistan, Broadwell expanded her work into a biography, gaining unprecedented access to Petraeus and his commanders. It's called "All In: The Education of General David Petraeus."

Their affair began in November 2011, a couple of months after he became CIA director, according to retired Army Col. Steve Boylan, a friend of the Petraeus family. It ended last summer, Boylan said.

The relationship was exposed after Broadwell of Charlotte, N.C., sent emails to another woman, Jill Kelley, warning her to stay away from Petraeus, officials said.

___

JILL KELLEY

All threads in the story trace back to this Tampa, Fla., socialite.

A surgeon's wife and mother of three children, Kelley is a sort of self-appointed social ambassador for the nearby U.S. Central Command and other officers at MacDill Air Force Base. The Kelleys opened their bayside home to lavish parties where military brass mingled with Tampa's elite. In this role, she befriended Petraeus and his wife, Holly, when he took over Central Command in October 2008.

Kelley, 37, stayed in close contact with Petraeus after he left to take command of the Afghanistan war. They exchanged nearly daily emails in an account routinely monitored by his aides, according to two former staffers, who said those messages weren't romantic in tone.

In May, Kelley started getting anonymous, harassing emails warning her away from Petraeus. She reported the email to the FBI.

The FBI traced the messages to Broadwell, uncovering her affair with Petraeus. The FBI notified Petraeus' boss, Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who urged him to resign.

And the FBI found something more.

It unearthed "inappropriate communications" between Kelley and another top military officer, John Allen, according to Pentagon officials.

___

JOHN ALLEN

The four-star Marine general who followed in Petraeus' footsteps at Central Command and then as top U.S. commander in Afghanistan is now following him into choppy waters.

The Pentagon is investigating 20,000 pages of documents and emails involving Allen, who is married, and Kelley. Some of the communications were "flirtatious," according to a senior defense official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss the case publicly.

Like Petraeus, Allen, 58, was part of the Tampa social circle; he moved up to acting commander when Petraeus left for Afghanistan. When Petraeus came home from Afghanistan, Allen moved into the top job there ? his current post.

President Barack Obama has nominated Allen to take over U.S. European Command and lead all NATO forces in Europe. That's been put on hold. He denies any wrongdoing and remains in charge in Afghanistan.

___

NATALIE KHAWAM

Kelley's twin sister also socialized with the two generals. Both Petraeus and Allen wrote letters lauding Khawam as a devoted mother to help her in a bitter child custody battle with her ex-husband. Earlier in that divorce case, Superior Court Judge Neal Kravitz had criticized Khawam for a lack of honesty and "misrepresentations about virtually everything."

___

HOLLY PETRAEUS

Petraeus' wife of 38 years, mother of their two grown children, is in charge of service member assistance at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and is a well-known advocate for military families. Mrs. Petraeus is said to be devastated by her husband's infidelity. "Furious would be an understatement," family friend Boylan told ABC's "Good Morning America."

___

THE SHIRTLESS FBI AGENT

And then there's this unnamed character: The FBI agent to whom Kelley first took her complaint was a longtime friend. And he had once sent her shirtless photos of himself, according to a federal law enforcement official.

He passed the information along to others for investigation, and was subsequently told to steer clear of the case because his superiors worried that he had become obsessed with it, the official said.

But the agent passed along a tip about Petraeus' affair to Republican Rep. Dave Reichert of Washington state, who got word to House Majority Leader Eric Cantor on Oct. 27, nearly two weeks before the scandal became public.

Definitive Proof That Robots and QR Codes Are Not the Future of Bartending

It's generally assumed that robots will eventually take over all jobs currently staffed by humans. But tending bar could be one of the hold outs, if this Social Drink Machine is any indication. It lets patrons place orders through a combination of social media, mobile apps, and QR codes, but in this case the whole is unfortunately not greater than the sum of its parts. More »

10 things every MMA fan needs to know about judging

There are hundreds of MMA fights around the country every weekend. Each fight needs qualified judges to score the action, but the growth of MMA means there aren't enough judges to go around.

Over the weekend, I sat in on an MMA judging clinic by Association of Boxing Commissions-certified trainer Robert Hinds of Combat Consulting. (The ABC is the group that oversees the state commissions that administer MMA across the United States.) The clinic gives prospective judges to be a place to start their judging career, and several state commissions require certification from an event like the one I attended. Whether you want to be a judge or not, every MMA fan should know something about how winners and losers are chosen when fights go to decisions. Here is what you need to know:

1. Judges look at result of the move, not the move itself. It's not about the takedown. It's about what happens from the takedown. It's not about the punch. It's about if the punch lands, and if it has an impact.

2. Judges are not fans. If they are scoring as fans, they should be fired. Judges have to be dispassionate and objective in every fight they judge. If they are a fan of one fighter or another, they need to reconsider their job.

3.Media, fans and promoters have no business comparing their score cards to those of judges. When I'm covering fights, I'm watching the fights, taking notes, tweeting and answering emails, text messages and instant messages. When fans watch the fights, they watch the fights, order beers, talk with friends, and check out the waitress who just delivered another plate of wings. When a promoter watches the fights, he or she is watching the fights, keeping an eye on the broadcast, dealing with inevitable problems on every fight card, and talking with fans and staff.

When a good judge is watching a fight, he or she is watching the fight. That's it. He or she has been trained on how to focus on the fight and see what has affected the round. Every bit of their brain power is focused on the fight. I've never had a judge tell me how to cover a story. I shouldn't try to do their job, and neither should you.

4. Positioning? matters. With three judges around the cage, each one will not see the same thing. Sometimes a judge will not see a punch because only a fighter's back is visible. While monitors help in this situation, they're not everywhere yet and they are not a cure all. The judge is then limited to the view decided by the director of the show. If you're wondering what fight a judge watched, realize that it may not be the exact same one you saw on television.

5. Judges score rounds, not fights. When a round ends, the judge should score it and forget it. What happened in round one should not affect what score a judge gives in round three. In fact, Hinds recommended the use of individual score cards for each round so that judges are not influenced by their previous score.

6. 10-10 rounds are rare. Hinds described 10-10 rounds as a "unicorn." In a five-minute round, or even a three-minute round, something should happen that will give one fighter the edge over another. An observant judge should be able to catch it. 10-8 rounds have a specific definition: complete domination and significant impact for the entire round. If you don't see both, it's not a 10-8.

7. Judges can do nothing but judge. If a foul is not called by a ref, the judge cannot deduct a point. If a fighter's corner is giving the fighter terrible advice, the judge cannot give the fighter the benefit of the doubt. If the matchmaker came up with a terrible fight, the judge cannot take a round off and expect the knockout. The judge can judge the round. That's it.

8. What makes a bad judges is not the results they give, but their methods in judging and not using the criteria. Judges have a criteria and professional standards to follow. They need to carefully judge rounds, staying focused the entire time on using the criteria to call a winner in each round. If they are looking away, talking to someone, or eating or drinking during a round, that's a problem. If they can't say how the criteria applied to their judgment, that's a problem.

9. Not everyone can be a judge. During the clinic, we watched several fights to practice judging. Five minutes at a time, we practiced focusing on the fight and nothing else. It took me about a minute before my mind wandered. On Saturday night, we sat cageside for amateur fights so we could practice what we learned during the day. MMA's brutality is in your face from that distance. One man from the clinic confessed? being so close to the action was emotional.

Judges have to be focused, and they cannot be squeamish. If you're not OK with listening to fighters get hit in the head, or hearing their bones crunch throughout their fights, or having blood and sweat fly onto your face, don't be a judge.

10. Judging ain't easy. Much like any profession, judges don't wake up one day and decide it's time to start judging UFC fights. Someone hoping to be a qualified judge has to practice by judging fights on television and judging sparring sessions at nearby gyms. They attend clinics and shadow judges in amateur fights before trying it themselves, then do the same routine before trying a professional fight.

With the growth of MMA from the amateurs on up the UFC, the sport needs good judges. If you think you can contribute to the sport in this way, contact your state commission.

A Salute To War Vets and Service Pets (PHOTOS) - Global Animal

(SERVICE DOGS) As we take this day to commemorate our honored vets, we should also take a moment to thank the service dogs who aid these respected men and women. While many U.S. veterans struggle with invisible wounds such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression, some of them are able to find peace from their four-legged friends. For instance, one organization, Operation Freedom Paws, a nonprofit in Gilroy, California, is working to help veterans in need train their own service dogs. The VA has been studying the effectiveness of canine therapy for troops suffering from PTSD, however it was recently placed on hold in order to rewrite the study?s parameters to take into account the dogs? temperaments and the importance of matching the trainers with the patients?not just the dogs. Read on to learn more about the organization?s efforts as well as the benefits of dog interaction. ? Global Animal

Elliott C. McLaughlin, CNN

He was antisocial and difficult to work with at first. He?d clearly been abused by his father as evidenced by the deep, round scab near his shoulder. He hadn?t been eating well.

And he was so skittish that the slightest noise or motion set him off. But Army veteran Jeff Wilson needed a new dog, and this pound puppy ? a border collie-German shepherd mix ? was it.

He named him Lobo, and it wasn?t long before Wilson, 44, realized they had the same issues.

?We were kind of kindred spirits,? he said. ?I think it really helped deepen our connection because he wasn?t just helping me; I was helping him. I was helping him get past the same obstacles that I had. I had to recognize it in myself and get past that to help him.?

Lobo helps Jeff Wilson keep cool in public places. If Wilson?s anxiety kicks in, Lobo will jump and put his paws on Wilson?s chest to give him something else to focus on. Photo Credit: CNN

Wilson is a former tank commander and flight engineer who isn?t at liberty to speak about his time in Iraq other than to say he manned a machine gun while hanging out of the door of a helicopter. He can also say that he was often ?exposed to very dangerous situations? during his 14 years in the service.

He has been diagnosed with depression and anxiety from post-traumatic stress disorder, and he?s not alone. According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, 11% to 20% of Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans are suffering from PTSD.

Wilson said his depression turned him into a hermit. He would ?curl up and not talk to anybody,? and his anxiety made it difficult to go into public.

If he did leave the house, he was hypervigilant. If someone walked up behind him or dropped something that emitted a clatter, it triggered the ?fight or flight? mechanism he?d groomed in the military.

The anxiety was so bad that before he was diagnosed with PTSD, he went to the emergency room four times because he thought he was having a heart attack. He ?self-medicated? so heavily with booze that it strained the relationship between him and his now-wife of two years.

Iggie calms James McQuoid in public places, creating space between McQuoid and others. He also wakes McQuoid from nightmares and keeps his overall anxiety level down. Photo Credit: Adam Alphin, CNN

?I was having to drink to numb all my senses and be quasi-normal,? he said.

But today, with Lobo by his side, Wilson is finding it easier to cope.

The two have been working with Operation Freedom Paws, a nonprofit in Gilroy, California, that helps veterans train their own service dogs. It is run by Mary Cortani, a veteran and one of the top 10 CNN Heroes of 2012.

When veterans train ?their own service dog, there are immediate benefits right off the bat,? Cortani said. ?They have a mission and a purpose again. It gives them something to focus on and to complete. It gives them a sense of security and safety. ? They know they?re not alone. They?ve always got their buddy at the end of the leash.?

Now Wilson tells Lobo, ?Watch my back,? and his four-legged friend stands behind him and gives him a nudge if anyone approaches. When something stokes Wilson?s anxiety, Lobo senses it, jumps up and puts his paws on Wilson?s chest so he can redirect his focus.

?Knowing he?s there makes me comfortable,? Wilson said. ?I?m not worried about the attacks. I still think about them, but I?m not hampered by them. I can go to the movies.?

A study on hold

The Veterans Affairs Department recently put a study on hold that would determine the effectiveness of canine therapy for troops suffering from PTSD. Until that study is complete, the VA will continue providing dogs for a variety of ailments, but not PTSD.

Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Georgia, co-sponsored the 2009 legislation that kicked off the study. He was inspired by the strides that dogs helped his mother make from 1995 to 1998 after she was stricken with Alzheimer?s.

?She wasn?t very fond of dogs at all, but when she developed Alzheimer?s, they became a key part of her therapy,? the senator said. ?She was unable to really communicate at that time, but you could easily tell, emotionally, the calming effect the service dogs had.?

Isakson said the VA is rewriting the parameters of the study to take into account the dogs? temperaments and the importance of matching the trainers, not just the dogs, with the patients.

Yet not everyone is convinced ?the VA has the right stuff? to conduct the necessary experiments, said Corey Hudson, CEO of Canine Companions for Independence and president of the North American chapter of the umbrella organization, Assistance Dogs International.

Hudson said he hopes the study will be large enough to consider the broad gamut of symptoms associated with PTSD, as well as the anecdotal evidence suggesting canine companions can help tug the disorder?s sufferers from their shells.

?There?s something mystical and magical about dogs and people and placing them together,? said Hudson, who has ?worked with and against the VA? during his 22 years of experience with assistance dogs. Canine Companions for Independence has more than 900 puppy raisers and works to pair veterans with dogs regardless of whether the VA shells out for it.

Shadow is the only reason Jennifer Haeffner goes out in public these days. Photo Credit: CNN

Hudson doesn?t cite scientific studies, such as the one that says canine interaction increases a human?s level of oxytocin, a hormone that reduces anxiety and blood pressure.

Instead, he speaks about how dogs love unconditionally and don?t judge. He explains how they naturally spark social interaction ? ?Cool dog; can I pet her?? ? and how ownership precludes people from locking themselves in their homes, away from society.

?You can also use them as an excuse to get out of things or leave early,? Hudson said.

Case in point

Shadow is one pooch accustomed to being used for such occasions.

The 2-year-old Labrador-Bernese mountain dog mix is the inseparable pal of Jennifer Haeffner, a seven-year Army veteran who had been housebound for about five years before meeting Shadow in the summer.

?He?s a very active dog. It makes me do things. I don?t have the option of hiding in the house. I have to go out,? said the 41-year-old Ripon, California, resident.

During Operation Desert Storm, where she served for about nine months between 1991 and 1992, she was sexually assaulted on multiple occasions by other service members, she said. It?s a fairly common occurrence that befalls about one in four women in the military, according to the VA.

It left her feeling alone in the world. She wanted to disappear. She forgot how to deal with people and eventually became a recluse, considering it a ?good month? if she got out just once to shop for groceries.

She didn?t attend any of her large family?s gatherings. Too many people and too much noise, she said. It terrified her.

?For years after that, I would go out and wander the streets late at night, just hoping someone would kill me because I wasn?t brave enough to kill myself,? she said.

About five months ago, her therapist recommended that she meet Cortani.

Cortani recalls Haeffner wouldn?t look her in the eye when they met. Her leg bounced when she spoke, and she pressed her fingernails into her arm. Her boyfriend was constantly by her side.

?You could just tell the pain and the anguish that even meeting me for the first time was causing,? said Cortani, an Army veteran herself.

Operation Freedom Paws teaches participants to train their own dogs, to customize their behavior. First, the dogs learn to sit, then heel ? the basic stuff.

Shadow now knows how to pick things up for Haeffner so she doesn?t put stress on her bad back and hips. He acts as a barrier, physically putting himself between her and any new people she meets.

When she wakes up feeling gloomy, he lets her stay in bed and pet him until she?s ready to face the day. If she hears a sound during the night, he stays by her side as she checks it out, and Shadow is quick to snap her out of nightmares.

?He?ll breathe on me or lay his head across mine to wake me up,? she said of her 55-pound companion. ?If I?m in a bad mood, he?ll come over and insist I play with his toy or lay his lead in my lap or lick my feet ? cheer me up.?

Cortani said the difference between the Haeffner of five months ago and the Haeffner of today is like ?night and day.?

She builds friendships. She?s been to the aquarium. She?s gone horseback riding. She goes places without her boyfriend.

?She?s creating her own new normal,? Cortani said.

Added Haeffner: ?I?m much better now. I?m happier.?

Before she met Vito, Ana Sarver would average about two hours of sleep a night. Like many veterans with PTSD, she would struggle with restlessness, nightmares and hypervigilance. Vito also gives Sarver the ability to function during the day. With the dog at her side, Sarver feels more comfortable in social settings such as restaurants. Photo Credit: CNN

Stocks end flat amid fiscal cliff concerns

9 hrs.

Stocks closed?Monday flat amid concerns of a drawn-out battle over the "fiscal cliff."

Barclays cut its year-end target for the S&P 500 to 1,325 from 1,395, citing the government spending cuts and tax increases that will take effect early next year unless Congress acts before then.

The S&P 500 dropped 2.4 percent last week, the worst week for the benchmark index since June. The drop was partly propelled by concerns about whether there will be a timely solution to avoid the "fiscal cliff."

Though most consider it unlikely that a deal will not be reached, analysts fear going over the cliff could push the economy back into recession. There are also concerns that a protracted debate could hurt business and investment sentiment.

"It's just the uncertainty. It's going to continue to have that negative influence on any kind of small business growth or hiring or planning," said Alan Lancz, president of Alan B. Lancz & Associates Inc in Toledo, Ohio.

"You not only have it for small businesses and the like, but on the investor side, too."

Stocks traded little changed for much of the day before gaining modest strength briefly in the early afternoon. Trading volume was light, with the U.S. bond market and government offices closed for the Veterans Day holiday.

Gilead Sciences helped pull the Nasdaq higher after the company reported over the weekend a 100 percent cure rate using a combination of drugs in a small number of patients with the most common and hardest to treat form of hepatitis C.

The S&P 500 is still up about 10 percent for 2012, though recent months have eroded those gains. The Nasdaq has fallen for five straight weeks.

Earlier in the day,?NYSE Euronext?suspended trading in more than 200 stocks on the New York Stock Exchange due to a technical problem with a server, although the stocks in question continued trading on other markets.?The NYSE?first alerted traders it was having problems with one of its cash equity matching engines at 9:38 a.m. and it said it would not publish quotes on a total of 216 stocks, including CVS Caremark ?and Lazard .

The NYSE said it ?anticipates a normal trading day in all securities? on Tuesday.

Some major acquisition news gave investors reason for optimism on Monday. Precision Castparts Corp offered to buy Titanium Metals Corp for $2.9 billion, while Leucadia National Corp agreed to buy investment bank Jefferies Group for $3.6 billion.

Overseas, a report over the weekend showed China's export growth climbed to a five-month high, beating expectations and adding to recent data suggesting the country's seven straight quarters of slowing economic growth have ended.

Investors also watched the latest developments from the euro zone debt crisis. Euro zone governments will not agree to disburse more money to debt-ravaged Greece on Monday, despite the country's approving a tough 2013 budget, because there is not yet a consensus on how to make its debts sustainable into the next decade.

As a result, the region's finance ministers may have to talk again later this week.

'Doomsday Preppers' Get Ready for the Apocalypse

Big Al will not drink his own urine. He's very clear about that. But he does spend three months of every year in his underground bunker because he fears that the Russians might send a nuclear missile toward Uncle Sam at any moment.

His bunker, buried 10 feet (3 meters) underground in an undisclosed location, will protect him from the gamma rays of an atomic bomb. But the temperature outside his bunker dips to minus 40 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 40 degrees Celsius) in the winter, so he stores 10,000 pounds (4,536 kilograms) of wood inside to keep him warm using his wood-burning stove (which curiously seems to lack a chimney), and a one-year supply of "bunker stew." He is also a music producer, and has lately turned to writing country songs about preparing for the apocalypse.

Big Al (who declined to give his last name) is just one person featured in the second season of "Doomsday Preppers," a show on the National Geographic Channel that profiles extreme survivalists who believe the world as we know it may soon end. The show's first season was the highest-rated on the network at the time. The second season debuts Tuesday (Nov. 13) at 9 p.m. ET.

What the survivalists believe

The show also features Braxton and Kara Southwick, a couple who lives in a suburb of Salt Lake City with their six kids. Braxton believes terrorists may attack the United States with weaponized smallpox, and for that reason, the family has stockpiled more than 2,000 pounds (907 kg) of flour, sugar and wheat, along with 14 guns and eight chickens, enough food to support their family of eight for more than one year. Braxton Southwick also buried 1,000 pounds of coal in his backyard.

?

Another prepper, Wilma Bryant, stockpiles insulin for herself and her diabetic daughter because she thinks a series of EF-5 tornadoes will destroy much of the country. [End of the World? Top Doomsday Fears]

Perhaps a more understandable fear, economic collapse, drives prepper Scott Hunt, co-founder of Practical Preppers, LLC, a company that helps people prepare for disasters. More than 90 percent of his clients fear some sort of economic ruin, Hunt said.

The recent experience of Hurricane Sandy is also a reminder that a certain level of preparedness makes sense, Hunt said.?

Underlying issues

John Hoopes, a researcher at the University of Kansas and expert on the so-called Mayan doomsday prophecy, said he thinks preppers' motivation "stems from apprehension about the U.S. government and its ability to deal with people's fears about security, the economy and the welfare of their families." Many also have concerns about government interference with private autonomy, he said. Many more of the preppers are also men, which he thinks speaks to their need to feel "in charge" and provide protection for their wives and families.

Preppers' reference to the Mayan "doomsday" myth helps to deflect discussion of some of the underlying issues they face; the myth is a cover for fears that are probably less politically correct to admit, he said.

"These include fears of the increasing ethnic and cultural diversity in American society and fears that are rooted in racism and perceptions that [minorities] are threats," Hoopes said. "It's telling that it is members of that historically dominant majority who are the ones doing the prepping. Are minorities in urban areas prepping? Are gays and lesbians prepping? I don't think so."

Homeschool: Veteran's Day : Ideas for Women Home and Family Blog

Sunday was Veteran?s Day (which the country observes today) that day in which we celebrate all?Veteran?s?from our Armed Services. The ways in which to celebrate this day in your homeschool class are endless. It is completely up to you. Since I am a military brat and we live near one of the largest military bases in the country we attend Veteran?s Day?festivities?there. One year we even took a trip to Washington DC to see the Vietnam Memorial.

A few suggestions for your lesson plans are:

  1. Discuss each war briefly. Talk about each war briefly discussing who fought for what side, who won, how they won, etc
  2. Watch war movies. While these may be inappropriate for younger children there are dozens of classic war movies that be watched.
  3. Learn about each branch of the service. Your local recruiting office will gladly supply you materials that you can use while you discuss each branch of service. Children will find things interesting such as the red stripe down the side of a Marine?s uniform is their way of honoring those who have shed their blood in service or that Army Rangers ?Never ?leave a man behind.? Things like that recruiters will share with you and you can create a whole lesson around it.

What do you think? Click here to leave a comment: Comments (0)

Milford, CT Dyslexic Environmental Blogger: Eco-Innovation ...

Eco-Innovation | Rainforest Realities
Across Indonesia, forestry science experts are enabling eucalyptus trees ? which historically took about 12 years to reach full production size ? to grow to maturity in half that time. This six-year rotation not only allows pulpwood suppliers to produce more pulp on less land, but also helps them maintain cover on their forest concessions. Researcher Haryo Riko explains how the innovative process begins in the lab, and nursery coordinator Andi Maglin describes how it succeeds in the field.

Twin explosions strike southern Syrian city

BEIRUT (AP) ? Two large explosions shook Syria's southern city of Daraa on Saturday, causing multiple casualties and heavy material damage, the country's state-run news agency and activists said.

The SANA agency did not immediately give further information or say what the target of the explosions was, but the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which relies on a network of activists on the ground, said the blasts went off near a branch of the country's Military Intelligence in Daraa.

The Observatory said the explosions were followed by clashes between regime forces and rebels fighting to topple President Bashar Assad.

The southern city of Daraa was the birthplace of the Syrian uprising against Assad, which erupted in March 2011. The conflict began largely with peaceful protests against Assad's rule but turned bloody after rebels took up arms in response to the regime's crackdown.

The crisis has since morphed into a vicious civil war and in recent months, rebels have driven regime forces out of much of a pocket of northwestern Syria and are battling troops in several cities and towns, even as the fight takes on dangerous sectarian tones between a mainly Sunni opposition and a regime dominated by Assad's minority Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Explosions targeting state security institutions have become frequent in recent months, and military intelligence branches in Damascus and other cities have been hit. Most dramatically in July, rebels detonated explosives inside a high-level crisis meeting in Damascus, killing four top regime officials, including Assad's brother-in-law and the defense minister.

Activists say more than 36,000 people have died in Syria during the nearly 20-month-old conflict.

The explosions in Daraa come a day after as many as 11,000 people were said to have fled Syria over just 24 hours, to escape fierce fighting between rebels and government forces ? the latest surge of refugees fleeing the civil war.

The flood of Syrians into neighboring Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon was "the highest that we have had in quite some time," said Panos Moumtzis, the U.N. refugee agency's regional coordinator for the region said Friday.

About 2,000 to 3,000 people are fleeing Syria daily, and the recent surge brings the number registered with the UNHCR to more than 408,000, he said.

The largest flow into Turkey came from the fighting at Ras al-Ayn in the predominantly Kurdish oil-producing northeastern province of al-Hasaka, where rebels were fighting government forces.

Georgetown-Florida called at halftime, wet court

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? The men's basketball game between No. 10 Florida and Georgetown on the deck of a ship was called off at halftime Friday night because the court became too wet.

Florida led 27-23 at the break in the Navy-Marine Corps Classic when the matchup aboard the USS Bataan was stopped by the court condensation. The game will not count and will not be made up.

"It was all about student-athlete welfare," said Alan Verlander, the director of sports and entertainment for the city of Jacksonville. "We did not want to affect anyone's season if someone went down. It's an unfortunate situation, but it was still a spectacular event.

"We've got to go back to work and maybe become meteorologists and do some things different. We and the Navy are committed to the event and doing it right."

Earlier in the evening, the men's game between No. 4 Ohio State and Marquette on the USS Yorktown in South Carolina was canceled before it began for the same reason.

The cancellations aboard the ships cast doubt on whether these outdoor games will continue in the future. The Yorktown, however, did host a women's game late Friday afternoon, with No. 7 Notre Dame beating No. 19 Ohio State 57-51 without any problems on the court.

Florida and Georgetown players warmed up after intermission and volunteers mopped the court with towels, but the nighttime humidity near the Intracoastal Waterway caused too much wetness.

"Time of day is something we'll examine," Verlander said.

Georgetown coach John Thompson III and Florida coach Billy Donovan expressed concerns about court condensation Thursday.

But officials left the tarp off the playing surface Wednesday night and reported no problems, easing some apprehension. But temperatures warmed Friday, causing changes in the dew point.

"This is very disappointing," Donovan said. "The floor is just too wet and we don't want anyone getting hurt."

Players experienced no issues in the first half. Florida's Mike Rosario had the only noticeable slip, and that could have been caused by drops of sweat.

"I never noticed anything in the first half," Florida forward Erik Murphy said. "I never slipped. I noticed a couple times when play was stopped kids drying the court, but I didn't think anything of it. When we came out for warm-ups, it still seemed OK, but if you look at the floor now, they made the right decision."

The floor was a mess when officials finally called it following a 15-minute delay coming out of the break. Players, coaches and even the referees tried to no avail to dry the surface.

"It's just tough around this time, the weather," Florida guard Kenny Boynton said. "I'm not sure what caused the water, but it's definitely tough. We've got to get an indoor event, I guess."

Event organizers said they want to do it again next year.

The pomp and circumstance surrounding the game, as well as players and coaches interacting with military members, seemed like a good idea to everyone.

All 3,800 seats were filled, even at $1,000 a ticket, and there were hundreds more standing in open areas around the court. Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus conducted a re-enlistment ceremony at halftime. There were fireworks off the back of the 388-foot amphibious assault ship. And several professional athletes were on hand, including Olympic gold medalist swimmer Conor Dwyer and Jacksonville Jaguars players Paul Posluszny and Laurent Robinson.

"I think it's good," Boynton said. "I think it's nice we get to be around the troops. We definitely look up to these guys. I definitely would do it all over again. I had a good two days here."

The Goldfish: A Humble Pet With An Imperial History

Goldfish are very popular pets. Some of their popularity stems from the fact that they are relatively easy to keep and very cheap to acquire. Not so many years ago, the goldfish was a prize frequently given away at state and county fairs. Still, just because these fish are plentiful, that doesn't make them common. The history of the humble goldfish is bound up with the history of emperors.

?

?

The Asian carp, from which the goldfish is descended, was kept as a food fish by the ancient Chinese. During the Jin Dynasty (265 - 420 CE), people began noticing that some of these normally gray or silver fish had mutations causing red, orange, or yellow coloration. Soon, the Chinese were breeding fish especially for their color.

By the time of the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), it was popular to keep these ornamental fish in home ponds. When guests were expected, the well-to-do would even put their prettiest fish in containers to be brought inside for display.

It is known that an empress of the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279) kept just such an ornamental pond herself. During this time, people outside of the royal family were forbidden to keep yellow goldfish, as yellow was the imperial color. Commoners could keep orange goldfish, so these were bred en masse and are still the most common color variety today.

Goldfish were introduced to Japan in 1603, to Europe in 1611, and to North America in 1850. Today, there are around 50 varieties and goldfish are one of the most commonly kept aquarium fish.

Nobel laureate Soyinka: Nigeria 'at war' with sect

LAGOS, Nigeria (AP) ? Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka on Friday dismissed calls for peace negotiations with the radical Islamist sect known as Boko Haram and said Nigerian society is at stake in what he described as a war for survival.

Nigeria's northeast remains under almost daily attack by the sect, which is blamed for killing more than 740 people this year alone, according to an Associated Press count. Three police officers died in an apparent bombing carried out by the sect in Yobe state early Friday morning, officials said.

Soyinka, a 78-year-old playwright and essayist, was once marked for death by one Nigerian military ruler. He has both has feuded with and befriended others. Africa's most populous nation now has a civilian government, though the military remains a powerful behind-the-scenes force.

Despite his often strained relations with his country's military, Soyinka said the military should tackle Boko Haram head-on.

He acknowledged that grinding poverty in Nigeria's north gave rise to Boko Haram, but said negotiating with "mass murderers" would not end the cycle of violence tearing at the country. He also suspects that crooked politicians had a role in Boko Haram's early rise.

Politicians who wanted to rig elections "activated this brainwashed horde of religious militants. That's how it started," Soyinka told foreign journalists in Lagos. Boko Haram members then "looked at those who unleashed them and they realized they were being manipulated. ... And now they are completely out of control."

Boko Haram, which means "Western education is sacrilege" in the Hausa language of Nigeria's Muslim north, has carried out shootings and bombings targeting both Christians and Muslims. The sect continues to kill despite a heavy military presence and says it will stop only if the government strictly implements Shariah law and frees its imprisoned members.

Soyinka called the prospect of the government engaging in peace talks "abysmal appeasement."

"The issue has become a security issue in which the question becomes: who goes down? Is (it) the community, the nation, the society that goes down or is it a bunch of killers who are totally beyond control?"

In its fight against Boko Haram, Nigeria's military has killed dozens of civilians in reprisal attacks after its own soldiers died. Soyinka said the Nigerian military likely had committed "violations of fundamental human rights" in its assaults and that innocent people have been killed. However, he said soldiers had begun to refine their tactics and rely more on intelligence gathering rather "than just a blitzkrieg approach."

"This is a new problem with the military," Soyinka said. "They have never had to cope with this kind of insurgency. So the military itself is making a lot of blunders."

Soyinka won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1986 for those works, the first African honored with the award.

4 Fast Ways To Build Mailing List Trust | Stephanie Deneke

While the rest of the world have developed many barriers and protections to keep their e-mail accounts spam-free, there are also those that subscribe to mails that promotes their products, services and their site. This is mainly because these subscribes want to know more about what these sites are offering and can be beneficial for them. They expect to get be kept posted on what they are interested in and what are new in the market or field they have chosen. Giving them what they expect builds mailing list trust.

mailing list 4 Fast Ways To Build Mailing List TrustBusinesses would be so lucky to have these kinds of customers; the basic element needed to get these types of people is trust. When your customers trust you they will reward you with their loyalty and mailing list trust. Many internet users have gone to great lengths in protecting their email accounts from spam mail. Some free-mail internet providers and internet service providers offer spam protection while there are also some internet based companies that screen your mails for you.

How To Build Mailing List Trust

With an opt-in mail list, the mails you send containing your promotional materials such as newsletters, catalogs and marketing media will go through. Your intended recipient will be able to read and view what you have sent making it a successful transfer of information. To be able to be allowed to do so, you will need permission from your recipient, to get this permission; you need to be able to get their mailing list trust. With the great lack of disregard for privacy in the internet, getting the trust of an internet user you don?t personally know is a big achievement.

To build a good opt-in list you need people to trust you, for a faster and quicker build up, you need to get your opt-in subscribers to trust you quickly. The faster you build your opt-in list the faster word about your site and company gets to be spread. The bigger the scope of your opt-in list the more traffic you get spelling more profits. Its easy math if you think about it. Getting the numbers is not that simple though, or maybe it is?

4 Quick Ways to Build Mailing List Trust

  1. ? Getting the trust of your clientele shouldn?t be so hard especially if you do have a legitimate business. Getting your customers mailing list trust should be based upon your expertise. People rely on other people who know what they are talking about. Garner all the knowledge and information about your business. Ell, frankly if you decide to go into a business most probably you have an interest in it. Like how many basketball payers become coaches, you don?t really venture into something you don?t have any interest in.
  2. ? Show your clients that you know what you are talking about. Provide them with helpful hints and guidelines that pertain to what you are selling. Talk about how to install a roof if your into hardware products or provide articles on insurance settlements if you?re a settlement lawyer. You don?t have to be a big corporation to make use of an opt-in list. If your customers see you as someone who knows what he is doing and saying, they will trust you quickly and grow your mailing list trust.
  3. ? Be true to your customers, if you want to hype up your products and services, provide guarantees. The more satisfied customers you get, the bigger probability there is that they will recommend you. Generally, people will trust someone they know, when that someone recommends you then you?re a shoo-in. They will go to your site and check it for themselves and be given a chance to experience what the other shave experienced from you, so make sure to be consistent in the service you provide.
  4. ? Another tip in getting a customer to trust you quickly is to provide them an escape hatch. Show them that you are not there to trap them. Keep a clean list that would enable them to unsubscribe anytime they want. Elaborate your web form by providing information on how to unsubscribe from the list. Guarantee them that they can let go of the service when ever they want to. Many are wary that they may be stuck for life and would have to abandon their email accounts when they get pestered with spam. Following spam laws builds mailing list trust.

Remember that when you get the trust of your clients don?t lose that trust. Because if you do anything with their email addresses like sell them or give them out, you will lose many members of your list as well as potential members. The true quickest way to gain the trust of your subscribers is when you are recommended by someone they trust.

When in doubt use the golden rule for building mailing list trust and only do unto others as you would have done to you.

Longevity programs offer a range of world-class wellness solutions that produce the best results when applied in synergy ? from face and body spa therapies, personalized fitness, and a whole food diet that acts as natural medicine, to non-rushed medical consultations, osteopathy, yoga and ozonotherapy, to cutting-edge anti-ageing biochemical analysis.

This new program prototype is based on Longevity?s preventive anti-ageing medical approach, where multidisciplinary diagnosis, treatments and therapies help identify and correct health imbalances as early as possible so as to prevent chronic degeneration from developing. Anti-ageing medicine promotes regular health maintenance through detoxification, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, nutrient-rich foods and supplements, high-quality oxygen, deep relaxation, hydration, sleep improvement, biophysical, biochemical and biostructural rebalancing, physical movement, and life enjoyment.

University of Miami Grad recognized for work on metal toxicity in freshwater and marine organisms

LONG BEACH, Calif. -- November 9, 2012 -- The Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry will present the SETAC/ICA Chris Lee Award to Kevin Brix at the its 33rd Annual Meeting, November 11 at the Long Beach Convention and Entertainment Center. Brix recently completed his Ph.D. at the Rosenstiel School of Marine & Atmospheric Science of the University of Miami (UM) and has already made exceptional contributions to the understanding of fate and effects of metals in the environment, to the mechanistic environmental toxicology of metals, and to the improvement of environmental regulations for metals.

Brix entered UM's PhD program in Marine Biology and Fisheries, where he was supervised by Professor Martin Grosell, in 2008. During the years 2008-2012 Brix published no less than 22 peer-reviewed papers, solidifying his reputation in the field of trace metal toxicity and environmental physiology of aquatic organisms. He was recruited, in part, through a Maytag fellowship and received a prestigious NSF Graduate Research Fellowship while at the Rosenstiel School. After defending his PhD in October, Brix accepted a Postdoctoral position at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada where he will continue his contributions to the field.

"The international SETAC/ICA Chris Lee Award given to Kevin this year, reflects his individual talent and commitment to advancing our knowledge of metals in the marine environment, and serves as an example of the valuable contributions our outstanding graduate students make when provided the opportunity," said Grosell, UM Professor and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies at the Rosenstiel School.

Brix's research focuses on the mechanisms of metal toxicity to freshwater and marine organisms, and his prolific publishing record, in both the peer-reviewed literature and through books and technical reports, underscores his influence in the field. In addition to research on the effects of metals on freshwater gastropods, Brix's work at UM has led him to study dietary metal exposure and its effects on aquatic organisms, an area receiving increased attention by regulatory agencies.
