Wavii (for iPhone) (beta)
A new mobile app called Wavii scours content online based on interests you select and summarizes it into a news feed for you. But it's too focused on celebrities and company-specific news to really make a splash in the aggregation app space. It also isn't nearly as graceful or innovative as a couple of apps that do nearly the same thing only better. Chief among these is Flipboard (free, 4 stars), one of the most beautifully designed apps I've ever seen, and our Editors' Choice among apps for browsing curated content. StumbleUpon's iPhone app (4 stars, free) equally earned our Editors' Choice award and differs from Flipboard in that it's more about exploring new content from the depths of the Web, than browsing posts and articles from the blogs and media outlets you love (which is what Flipboard does best).
Wavii's app tries to nail a new concept by not just aggregating news, bus also summarizing it and removing duplicate (that is, very similar) items from your list, but it doesn't hit a real stride in this early attempt. Worse, it loads very slowly and doesn't make clear to users exactly how it works and how their actions influence the app's results.
Features
You have to log in with Facebook. There isn't an option to sign up using only an email address, which I sorely lament. I don't appreciate having to give Facebook more advertising data about me simply to use some other service, and it is the number one reason I'll delete the app and revoke the permission from Facebook the moment I'm done reviewing the product for PCMag.
Upon initial launch, Wavii suggested some topics for me to follow: Acquisitions, Apple, Justin Bieber, Facebook, European Union, Kim Kardashian, and a number of other celebrities, politicians, and companies. While a few general topics surfaced in this list?Acquisitions, EU, Travel Announcements, Arrests, Interviews?I wasn't fully satisfied with the celeb- and brand-heavy selection.
In the section called Main Feed, Wavii delivers headlines and summaries of news stories on the topics that you've selected. A tag at the top of each item indicates its classification if it isn't apparent in the headline. For example, a news item with Food and Drug Administration in the headline clearly came from me ticking my interest in Food and Drug Administration announcements, but Wavii helped me out by putting the "Movie Trailer" tag above a YouTube video named "LOL (2012 film)."
Some items contained a quote below the headline, which gave me a better idea of the story's content. If "Interview: Danny Bilson interviewed for Ripten" leaves you asking, "Who?" then the quote goes a long way to clarify: "THQ CEO Danny Bilson has related in an interview some of the thoughts ?"
Each item in the Main Feed also features a feedback icon. Press it, and five emoticons appear. Unfortunately, it's not clear what these icons do. What's the difference between the blue happy face and the gray one? What happens if I press the angry face? Some Wavii users will unfold the details of the app by using it, I'm sure, but I like to know what my actions mean, especially for an app that is connected to Facebook and thus capable of feeding all my actions into an advertising manager's spreadsheet. Furthermore, I also want to know how my actions will affect the app's decisions regarding what content it will feed me next. I still rue the day I gave five stars to Big Momma's House 2 in my Netflix account.
Other options in the app lets you "Discover" new recommended topics, although I found the selection here to be just as paltry as the first one I perused. The list consisted almost entirely of pharmaceutical companies.
You can diver further into any story by seeing other sources that reported on the same material?perhaps the most useful feature, but replicates more or less what Google News provides?as well as the original source. When you pick a story and see more details about it, Wavii also offers you the option of "following" the people, media outlets, companies, or topics related to that story. This feature seemed to work well for me, until I checked out my profile, where you can see the number of topics and people you're following. After selecting to "follow" both Richard Branson and Squawk Box, I noticed they turned up in my profile as "topics" I follow rather than people. My hunch is that Wavii needs to do more usability testing to see that not all its naming conventions and functionality make total sense to a new user.
Wave Farewell
The new news aggregating app Wavii has a long way to go before it can compete with the likes of Flipboard, Twitter, or even StumbleUpon. Twitter has an air of excitement. It's incredibly fast-paced, and you never know what might happen. Flipboard excels as the number one app for browsing news and media, curating high quality content for you and displaying it exceptionally well. And for exploring the Web, no app does it better than StumbleUpon. Wavii has yet to make its mark.

At the time he called, Jim was involved in a pro se adversary case involving a dispute over the terms of a reaffirmation agreement. As I learned more and dug deeper, it started to look more and more likely that there was something going on in Jim?s case that didn?t pass the smell test. I?ve outlined the important facts of the case below so bankruptcy attorneys will be on the lookout for these types of reaffirmation schemes in their jurisdictions.
Pro Se Debtor Contacted About Mortgage ?Modification?
In 2010, Jim filed a pro se chapter 7 bankruptcy case stating his intention to surrender his underwater home. At the time of the bankruptcy, Jim?s home was in foreclosure, but had not yet been sold. Before Jim received his bankruptcy discharge, he was contacted by a representative at Household Finance Corporation II, a subsidiary of HSBC, who called to gauge his interest in reaffirming his mortgage debt. After many failed attempts at a modification, Jim was surprised that Household Finance offered to slash his interest rate from 10.99% to 5.25% while he was in bankruptcy, but he found the modified rate too attractive to pass up and agreed to reaffirm the debt.
Letters From Lawyers
In October, 2010, Jim received a letter and form reaffirmation agreement from John D. Schlotter of Aldridge & Connors, LLP in Atlanta, GA. Aldridge & Connors represents Household Finance Corp. in reaffirmation proceedings nationwide. Mr. Schlotter explained in his cover letter that the reaffirmation agreement contains
a ?rate modification reducing the annual interest rate on this loan to a fixed rate of 5.25%.? Mr. Schlotter goes on to explain that ?if the amount of income is less than total expenses, leaving a balance less than the amount needed for the monthly mortgage payment, then a presumption of undue hardship arises and an explanation must be provided.?
The Reaffirmation Hearing
Jim (remember he was pro se) amended his bankruptcy schedules, including Schedule J, to reflect the reaffirmation payments and motioned the Court to approve the reaffirmation agreement. A hearing was required because Jim was not represented by an attorney and the addition of the monthly mortgage payment put his monthly expenses approximately $2,500 below his monthly income. In November, 2010, the Bankruptcy Judge approved Jim?s reaffirmation agreement, but not without some hesitation. In rebutting the presumption of undue hardship, Jim pointed out that he was to receive a car from family and would therefore be able to surrender his current automobile to cut expenses. According to Jim, the Judge commented that ?this was one of the largest reaffirmation agreement payments he had approved?, but approved nonetheless on the strength of Jim?s amended budget which, after surrendering the car, still showed a monthly shortfall in expenses versus income.
The Trouble Begins?
Approximately five days before receiving his discharge order, the trouble began. Jim received a letter informing him of his right to cure defaults under the reaffirmation agreement as well as his first invoice for approximately $13,000 which included back property taxes paid by Household Finance Corporation, II. This was the first invoice Jim ever received. He was surprised to learn that he was already in default and that he was being charged for back taxes not disclosed in the reaffirmation agreement. The invoice was more than $10,000 above what he?d agreed to. Notably, section B of the reaffirmation agreement specified the amount reaffirmed as $617,892.92, which was Jim?s mortgage balance, including interest and penalties. By the reaffirmation agreements? express terms, the amount reaffirmed incorporated ?the entire amount? including ?unpaid principle, interest, and fees and costs (if any)? which arose on or before the date of the reaffirmation disclosure statement. Back taxes were not disclosed as a cost or fee.
Payments Don?t Add Up to the Amount Reaffirmed
With his suspicions raised, Jim found additional problems with his reaffirmation agreement. He realized that the sum of his payments amounted to a total far greater than what he?d agreed to reaffirm. Jim agreed to an annual interest rate of 5.25% on reaffirmed mortgage debt of $617,892. He agreed to make payments of $2,268.64 per month for 328 months starting in the month after the filing of the reaffirmation agreement. However, under the payment schedule listed in the reaffirmation agreement (328 payments of $2,268.64) he would pay $744,212.32 not $617,892 as he agreed. Over the life of the reaffirmation agreement, he was being overcharged by $126,320.32!
There Seems to be a Pattern
As Jim investigated further on PACER, he found repeated irregularities with Household Finance Corporation reaffirmation agreements in numerous states. Some, like his, overcharged. Others contained amortization schedules that fell far short of the amount reaffirmed, leaving borrowers with an undisclosed balloon payment at the end of their repayment term. A lump sum payment that would almost certainly push many of them into foreclosure, just at the time they though they had their home paid off. ?Outraged, Jim filed an adversary case, again pro se. It wasn?t until just before the Judge decided to throw out the reaffirmation agreement as void due to mistake that I caught wind of what was going on. I imagine that other Bankruptcy Courts would take a very different approach if they knew that the problems with Household Finance Corporation reaffirmation agreements are systemic and not just an isolated scriveners error. In all the cases Jim and I took a look at, we didn?t once see a Household Finance mortgage reaffirmation that added up to the actual amount reaffirmed.
HSBC?s ?Position?
In Jim?s adversary case,?HSBC argued that deferred interest payments of approximately $150,000 as well as attorneys? fees of approximately $10,000 were due and payable at the ?end of the repayment term? per the reaffirmation agreement contract. They also contended that additional fees were owed on top of Jim?s monthly payment (presumably why his first invoice was high by more than $10,000). HSBC makes an interesting argument because none of the fees they claim Jim owes were disclosed anywhere in his reaffirmation contract. Per section 524(K)(3)(C)(ii) of the Bankruptcy Code the ?Amount reaffirmed? must include the total of ?any fees and costs accrued as of the date of the disclosure statement.??Was HSBC arguing that Jim owed more in fees, even after the bloated monthly payments ceased? I?m not sure even they know, but here is a quote from their pleadings:
?Plaintiff was unaware of these existing repayment obligations under the reaffirmation agreement and filed this lawsuit because he never intended to be liable for the additional amounts that defendants seek to collect?in addition to the 328 payments of $2268.64 for principal and interest under the reaffirmation agreement.?

Syrian military on offensive before truce deadline
BEIRUT (Reuters) - Syrian troops pummeled opposition neighborhoods in the city of Homs with heavy mortars on Wednesday, hours after President Bashar al-Assad assured the United Nations he will respect a ceasefire with rebels due to take effect in less than 24 hours.
Activist videos posted on YouTube showed bombs crashing into the Khalidiya district, the latest target of Assad's drive to crush his opponents after troops overran the besieged rebel stronghold of Baba Amr in Homs a month ago.
Spouts of pulverized debris burst high into the air with each impact and plumes of dust and smoke drifted over the rooftops. The videos could not be independently verified and the Syrian government bars most independent media from the country.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), a British-based activist information organization, said one person was killed in the morning attacks.
"Mortar fire started at 7 this morning. I can hear one explosion every five minutes," said opposition activist Waleed al-Fares in Homs, where bombardment killed at least 26 people on Tuesday, the day Assad was supposed to have begun withdrawing troops, tanks and heavy weapons from urban centers.
Western powers have scorned Assad's truce pledges to U.N.-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan, but have come up with no effective policy to curb the bloodshed in Syria, given their own aversion to military intervention and the resistance of Russia and China to any U.N. Security Council action.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said she would meet Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Wednesday to seek a policy change from one of Assad's few foreign friends.
"We will have another go at trying to persuade the Russians that the situation is deteriorating and the likelihood of regional conflict and civil war is increasing," she said.
China expressed "deep worries" about the violence in Syria and called for all sides to respect a ceasefire. Foreign Ministry spokesman Liu Weimin also described Annan's work as "an important and rare opportunity" to end the crisis.

Annan's plan is for now the only game in town and the former U.N. chief said it must be given a chance to work. His deadline, endorsed by the Security Council, is for a ceasefire by dawn.
"If everyone respects it, I think by 6 in the morning (0300 GMT) on Thursday we shall see improved conditions on the ground," he said in Tehran, where he was asking Syria's staunchest regional ally to support his efforts.

But the Syrian military has so far stayed on the offensive, pursuing assaults on several anti-Assad strongholds, rather than withdrawing, as Annan's plan required them to do on Tuesday.
The SOHR said two people were killed in army raids in Deir al-Zor in the Euphrates river valley far to the east. Artillery shelled the Jebel Akrad area in the coastal province of Latakia.
"Helicopters flew overhead and the army prevented the evacuation of people. There are reports of houses being destroyed by shelling while families are still in them," said Rami Abdelrahman, head of the SOHR.
In southern Deraa, birthplace of the 13-month-old revolt against four decades of Assad family rule, activists said many busloads of troops backed by armoured vehicles had flooded the city and were making house-to-house raids.
Activist Omar al-Hariri said he had never seen so many troops: "The army is exploiting the ceasefire to arrest more dissidents than ever and security forces are burning houses."
Syrian government restrictions on independent media make it hard to assess accounts by officials and dissidents.
The SOHR said Syrian troops had killed 38 people on Tuesday, and rebels had killed 19 members of the security forces. The state news agency reported the funerals of 33 soldiers and security personnel the same day.
Anti-Assad rebels have said they will stop fighting if the Syrian military pulls back and ceases fire as promised.
Annan, at a news conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi, urged Iran to help resolve the violence and warned of "unimaginable consequences" if it worsened further.
"I have received (Syrian) government assurances they will respect the ceasefire," he said, adding: "I believe Iran can be part of the solution."
Salehi said Syrians should be able to have free elections contested by political parties, but reiterated Iran's opposition to any outside interference in Syria's affairs and made clear the Islamic Republic wanted Assad to stay in charge.
"The opportunity must be given to the Syrian government to make changes, under the leadership of Bashar al-Assad," he said.
Iran has unstintingly backed Syria, the only Arab nation to support Iran in its 1980-88 war with Iraq and the conduit for Iranian arms to Lebanon's Shi'ite Muslim Hezbollah movement.
Syria, where Assad's Shi'ite-rooted Alawite minority dominates a Sunni Muslim majority, has become an arena for a sectarian-tinged regional contest between Shi'ite Iran and Sunni Arab rivals aligned with the West and led by Saudi Arabia.
Despite its public acceptance of Assad's narrative that he faces foreign-inspired "terrorist" subversion, Tehran has also reached out to his opponents, according to an adviser to Iran's parliamentary speaker quoted by local media on Tuesday.

Are You Relationship Ready?

Most singles are seeking a committed relationship and date with that goal in mind. Many are not ready for commitment for a variety of reasons, but they don?t want to be alone, and so they date to find a partner anyway. When their dating strategy doesn?t align with their readiness status, these singles unconsciously set themselves up for failure, complicating their lives and those of their dating partners.
Just because you want something doesn?t necessarily mean you?re ready for it. Many variables can interfere with your readiness for a committed relationship with someone you meet, such as being involved with someone else, going through a divorce, financial trouble, career demands, family obligations, physical health challenges, or mental/emotional health challenges such as addictions, depression, or anxiety disorders.
It would be a tragedy to meet your soul mate and not be ready for them. Getting involved in a relationship before you are ready can create a shaky foundation of unfinished business that eventually brings a relationship crashing down.
To assess your readiness for a committed relationship, rate yourself in each of the following ten areas. Try to be objective and honest with yourself. We recommend asking close friends and family members for their opinions as well.

Facebook to?purchase Instagram for $1 billion

If a picture is worth a thousand words, a website with a boatload of pictures is now worth $1 billion.
That is the price Facebook agreed to pay for Instagram, a less-than two-year-old company that makes a wildly popular mobile photography application.
"I'm excited to share the news that we've agreed to acquire Instagram and that their talented team will be joining Facebook,"?Facebook's head honcho Mark Zuckerberg?said in a posting on Facebook (where else?) Monday.
Facebook, which is busy planning an initial public offering that could value the social networking site at more than $100 billion, will pay a combination of cash and stock for Instagram, Reuters reported.?Based in San Francisco, Instagram has about a dozen?employees. The deal is expected to close by June 30.
"For years, we've focused on building the best experience for sharing photos with your friends and family. Now, we'll be able to work even more closely with the Instagram team to also offer the best experiences for sharing beautiful mobile photos with people based on your interests, Zuckerberg said in his Facebook post.
Facebook is expected to raise up to $10 billion in its IPO, which could come in May or June.
Last year, Facebook reportedly was planning to add filters and other tools to its mobile photography app to match?Instagram's popular filters, which allow users to manipulate?images to make them look old-timey and add other kinds of effects. The aim was to attract Instagram users and meet a competitive threat.
"We?re psyched to be joining Facebook and are excited to build a better Instagram for everyone," Instagram CEO Kevin Systrom?said ?in a statement.
He also promised the acquisition would not alter the Instagram experience for its approximately 30 million users.
?"The Instagram app will still be the same one you know and love. You?ll still have all the same people you follow and that follow you. You?ll still be able to share to other social networks. And you?ll still have all the other features that make the app so fun and unique,"?Systrom?said.
Last week, Instagram made the long-awaited announcement that its app was available for?users who run Google's Android on their smartphones.?Prior to that it was only available on iPhones.?The Android app?reportedly nabbed about 1 million downloads in the first?24 hours.?
The acquisition was a strategic departure for Facebook, which until now has been content with?buying startups on the cheap for their talent.?Instagram will run as an independent app with its own brand.?

"This is an important milestone for Facebook because it's the first time we've ever acquired a product and company with so many users,"? Zuckerberg said. "We don't plan on doing many more of these, if any at all."
Since?Instagram's founding in the autumn of 2010, it has gathered about $50 million in venture funding. That includes about $500,000 in seed?investment?in March 2010 from Andreesen Horowitz and Baseline Ventures, according to the website Crunchbase.?
Last year the company raised another $7 million, and this year the company just closed a $50 million round of funding that valued the company at $500 million, according to TechCrunch, meaning those investors virtually doubled their money overnight.

Drug Effective Against Prostate Cancer | Medical News and Health ...
(Ivanhoe Newswire) -- Do you or someone you know suffer from advanced prostate cancer (CRPC)? A new treatment may be available that can help treat the deadly disease.
Castration-resistant prostate cancer (CRPC) is an advanced form of prostate cancer that occurs when the disease progresses after treatment with androgen deprivation therapy.
A drug called galeterone works against CRPC by blocking the androgen receptor, reducing levels of the ligand that binds to the receptor and degrading the androgen receptor protein.
"This drug has a novel combined mechanism of action," R. Bruce Montgomery, M.D., co-author, at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Wash, was quoted as saying. "Cancer cells are sly and mutate to get around drugs. The fact that this drug hits the prostate cancer cell in three different ways may help prevent resistance. It is a well-tolerated drug that could potentially be more effective than drugs we have now."
For the study, Montgomery and colleagues assigned 49 patients with CRPC to one of eight dose regimens in single or split oral escalation doses of 650 mg, 975 mg, 1,300 mg, 1,950 mg or 2,600 mg every day for 12 weeks. None of the patients had received chemotherapy for their prostate cancer.
Researchers found that no patients reached a maximum tolerated dose. Most side effects were minimal and included fatigue, nausea and diarrhea. Researchers observed transient, increased liver function tests in 15 patients, many of whom were asymptomatic. Eleven of these patients temporarily stopped galeterone treatment, and six returned to treatment with no recurring liver function test elevations. Only one serious complication occurred involving rhabdomyolysis during simvastatin therapy.
In early adequacy tests, 49 percent of patients had prostate-specific antigen (PSA) reductions of 30 percent or more; 11 of these patients had reductions of 50 percent or more. In addition, CT scans showed reduction in tumor size for some patients.
"Because the androgen receptor controls PSA expression, improved PSA response shows that the drug is getting to the target," Montgomery said. "For the majority of patients, to reduce their PSAs by 30 percent or more is quite good in a phase I dose-finding trial."
Researchers plan to investigate long-term safety and an assessment of effectiveness in a phase II study that Tokai Pharmaceuticals has planned for the second half of 2012.

RIM to pull BlackBerry PlayBook away from "chaotic Android cesspool"
Research in Motion plans to drop the ability to sideload Android apps on the BlackBerry PlayBook, Alec Saunders, vice president of developer relations, announced Friday on Twitter. Saunders said that RIM wanted to avoid "duplicat[ing] the chaotic cesspool of Android market."
This is a kick in the shins at Android's app store, now called Google Play, which has had its share of problems with malware. The Android store environment also plays more heavily toward free apps than iOS, and the unfavorable sales-to-customer-support ratio can result in low profitability for developers. That aside, Saunders also highlights a issue that sideloading appears to facilitate: piracy. According to the RIM VP, there are instances of developers sideloading free Android apps they don't own. Crackberry also notes that sideloading Android apps results in buggy and difficult-to-use incarnations on the PlayBook for customers.
Saunders says that RIM is creating another solution for developers who want to transfer their apps to the platform, but in the meantime, this means that the PlayBook platform loses potential access to some 300,000 active applications in the Google Play Store?better a puddle than a (cess)pool, the company seems to think.
RIM plans to announce more details on Android sideloading later today, Saunders tells Ars.

Hi all,
I just finished writing the first version of TubeRun for Android. TubeRun is a London transport app that aims to present the most important data that TfL offers in a single app. My motivation for writing it was the low quality of similar apps found in the market. Typically they offer only a single important feature (eg a journey planner, a good map, bus departures) but they omit the others forcing you to install multiple apps which seldom work in a straightforward manner. In TubeRun, expect to find everything that matters so that you won't have to have 4 different similar apps installed. Features include:
-A Journey Planner that uses the TfL API for up-to-date travel plans
-Live Bus, Underground and DLR Departures
-Nearby Tube and Cycle Hire stations, with live bike/dock availability data
-Oyster Balance
-Underground Refund Claims
-The real Tube Map

-Fast ICS-inspired interface that doesn't rediscover the wheel
I plan to add more features, and I am posting this to request your feedback on what I should add/improve next. In the next version I plan to improve the Nearby section, adding the presentation of nearby stations on the map plus bus lines.
TubeRun is by no means perfect, however I think that it works really well already. Please, let me know your thoughts on it so that I am able to effectively improve it
