Passerine birds native North American continent - Pets, Birds and ...

Birds Cardinals are passerine birds native to the continents of North and South America. They have a variety that makes them an interesting bird for ornithologists. In terms of size, usually measuring about 12 cm long and weigh about 12 g, although you can find a variety that is 25 cm long and weighs about 85 g.

Passerine birds native North American continentThe family of birds Cardinals is divided into 5 species, which share characteristics that are derived from a common ancestor. Each of these species are divided into some subspecies. Its name derives from its bright red color, but not many people are aware of an important fact is that only males of this species have bright red color, while females have a slightly duller appearance.

This is considered as an adaptation of the species, which helps to attract the opposite sex for mating. They tend to gather in large flocks of about 70-100. These birds are omnivorous. Their diet includes seeds and grains, and a wide variety of insects.

One of the most popular species of birds of North American cardinals, Cardinal is the North. Nanoscale magnetic resonance imaging, quantum computer get nudge from new research

ScienceDaily (Feb. 23, 2012) ? Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on the nanoscale and the ever-elusive quantum computer are among the advancements edging closer toward the realm of possibility, and a new study co-authored by a UC Santa Barbara researcher may give both an extra nudge.

The findings recently appeared in Science Express, an online version of the journal Science.

Ania Bleszynski Jayich, an assistant professor of physics who joined the UCSB faculty in 2010, spent a year at Harvard working on an experiment that coupled nitrogen-vacancy centers in diamond to nanomechanical resonators. That project is the basis for the new paper, "Coherent sensing of a mechanical resonator with a single spin qubit."

A nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center is a specific defect in diamond that exhibits a quantum magnetic behavior known as spin. When a single spin in diamond is coupled with a magnetic mechanical resonator -- a device used to generate or select specific frequencies -- it points toward the potential for a new nanoscale sensing technique with implications for biology and technology, Jayich explained.

Among those possible future applications of such a technique is magnetic resonance imaging on a scale small enough to image the structure of proteins -- an as-yet unaccomplished feat that Jayich called "one of the holy grails of structural biology."

"The same physics that will allow the NV center to detect the magnetic field of the resonator, hopefully, will allow MRI on the nanoscale," Jayich said. "It could make MRI more accurate, and able to see more. It's like having a camera with eight megapixels versus one with two megapixels and taking a picture of someone's face. You can't see features that are smaller than the size of a pixel. So do they have three freckles, or do they all look like one big freckle?

"That's the idea," Jayich continued. "To resolve individual freckles, so to speak, to see what a protein is made up of. What we found in this paper suggests that it is possible, although a significant amount of work still needs to be done."

Though further into the future based on the approach used for this paper, Jayich said, there is also the potential for such a coupling to be advanced and exploited as a possible route toward the development of a hybrid quantum system, or quantum computer.

Jayich collaborated on the project with researchers Shimon Kolkowitz, Quirin Unterreithmeier, Steven Bennett, and Mikhail Lukin, all from Harvard; Peter Rabl, from the Institute for Quantum Optics and Quantum Information of the Austrian Academy of Science; and J.G.E. Harris, from Yale. The work was supported in part by the National Science Foundation, the Center for Ultracold Atoms, and the Packard Foundation.

Housing perks up, but prices are still falling

By John W. Schoen, Senior Producer

Though the pace of home sales picked up?last month as the economy and job market improved, home prices have yet to show any meaningful turnaround.

The National Association of Realtors said Wednesday that sales of existing homes ? which account for most of the housing market - ?rose 4.3 percent in January.?That pace of sales, about 4.5 million a year, is still much less than the 6 million rate that?s considered ?healthy.? And it?s far below the peak of 7 million homes sold in 2005.

Home prices are still going nowhere ? they fell 2.2 percent in January, according to the NAR. That?s because there is still no end in sight to home foreclosures: so-called ?distressed? home sales accounted for 35 percent of sales in January, up from 32 percent in December. As those homes are sold, they push prices lower for all houses on the market.

When foreclosures began rising in 2007, banks that were seizing homes moved them fairly quickly onto the market. But as the demand for housing shrank and prices dropped, bankers had more properties than they could sell without big price cuts. More recently, banks have been managing their foreclosure pipeline to avoid having too many houses on the market at once.

That process delayed foreclosures, as bankers wait to sell one home before scheduling the next foreclosure sale. As home sales improve, more of that ?shadow inventory? of houses in the pipeline will eventually come to market.

??We think the foreclosure process will accelerate, which will speed up the flow of distressed inventory,? said Michelle Meyer, an economist at BofA Merrill Lynch Global Research in a note to clients Wednesday

Home prices have pulled back fastest in parts of the country that saw the biggest run-up during the housing boom. But the latest figures show prices falling in every region of the country. In the Midwest, which was largely spared the worst of the housing collapse, prices fell by 5.5 percent on average in January. In the West, where prices have been hardest hit, the drop was a modest 0.7 percent. Prices fell 2.2 percent in the Northeast and 1.4 percent in the South, according to the NAR.

Once prices stabilize, they have a long way to go before recovering their 2005 peak; some estimates expect that to take until 2020. For historical reference, the last time home prices fell 33 percent was in?the 1930s? when the full cycle from peak to trough to peak took 19 years.

Record low interest rates have made houses more affordable, but it?s not likely they?ll fall much further. The Federal Reserve recently made an unusual public promise to keep rates low for the next three years. But as the economy continues to improve, the odds are that rates will move higher not lower from here.

Home buyers who take the plunge, meanwhile, are summoning up plenty of patience when it comes time to apply for a mortgage. Lenders are being extremely choosy about who they approve - even for borrowers with a steady job and good credit.

As the housing market has been suffering from an excess of supply of foreclosed homes, demand for houses has been falling?for a variety of reasons. Many of those foreclosed families face a long wait to rebuild their credit and household finances before diving back into homeownership. The drop in home prices has left roughly 12 million homeowners ?underwater,??owing more than their house is worth. Many of those are potential ?move-up? buyers who are now unable to sell their current home without taking a big loss.

There has also been a sizable drop in the number of new household formations, which have fallen to the lowest level in decades. Before?2007, new households in the U.S. were formed at the rate of about 1 million to 1.3 million a year. That pace has fallen to between 600,000 and 700,000, according to a recent analyst by Goldman Sachs economists.

There are a variety of reasons for the slowdown, according to the report. The biggest single factor is the larger share of 18 to 34-year-olds who are choosing to live with their parents. Falling marriage rates have also put a damper on new household formations, along with high unemployment rates that force people to ?double up? with friends or family.

Economists expect the household formation rate to?recover to historical norms, rising to 800,000 this year and level off at 1.1 million in 2013.

What do you think about the state of the housing market? Tell us your views on Facebook.?

Massive Pink Diamond Discovered In Australia, Worth Over $10 Million

A massive rough pink diamond has been unearthed in Rio Tinto's Argyle diamond mine in Western Australia, CNN reports.

At 12.76 carats, the remarkable find is said to be the largest stone ever discovered in the country and is expected to sell for up to $10.6 million, according to the Herald Sun.

Named the Argyle Pink Jubilee, the gem is similar in color to the 24-carat Williamson Pink given to Britain's Queen Elizabeth II as a wedding gift, explains the Telegraph.

"A diamond of this caliber is unprecedented -- it has taken 26 years of Argyle production to unearth this stone, and we may never see one like this again," Argyle Pink Diamonds Manager Josephine Johnson said in a statement.

The gem is being cut and polished into a single stone over a 10 day period and will be up for auction later in the year, Rio Tinto said.

In November 2010, Sotheby's Geneva office sold a 24.78-carat fancy intense pink diamond for more than $46 million, which set the world's auction record for any diamond and jewel at $1.86 million per carat.

More than 90 percent of the world's pink diamonds come from the Argyle mine.

Small business marketing should start with a plan

Small business marketing online can be great for any business, especially with more customers shopping on the internet every day. However, internet marketer James Debono said companies that want to take advantage of online marketing need to first develop a plan to ensure their strategies are aligned.

In a post on Business 2 Community, Debono said businesses should look at marketing tactics that increase brand awareness, build authority, build an online community and humanize their brand.

"Knowing what you are setting out to achieve will mean that you can focus your attentions on delivering just that and not waste valuable time and money," Debono said, adding that businesses should be delivering a consistent message with their online marketing.

Other things businesses need to remember when working online is that customers need to be continuously engaged and social media is a marketing tool that cannot be ignored.

According to a survey by Research Now, 57 percent of small businesses plan to use social marketing in the next year, an increase of 7 percent from the previous year. This combined with marketing emails can be a great way to inform people about a business.

Investigating Straightforward Programs Of Home Improvement

Posted By DigiuseppeBatarse709 on February 21, 2012

Home improvement can be a very fascinating thing to get into. It has so many ways that it can be customized for each home and the possibilities are nearly endless. This can make it a challenge for a newcomer who doesn?t have a clue where to begin. This list of tips can prepare you for the challenge.

When choosing paint colors for the exterior of your home, take your neighbors? homes into consideration. Your paint color should not clash with theirs, although you shouldn?t necessarily be afraid of bringing colors into your scheme. An unconventional but understated color choice can help your home stand out without looking garish.

A great home improvement tip is to hire a good architect or designer if you are not one yourself. Even though this will cost you money, you need to spend money in order to make good plans that work. In addition, you may need a permit or license for certain zoning or environmental restrictions. Professionals are needed to let you know of these things and to give you the information on the permits or licenses that are needed.

If you?re doing home improvements to help the sale of a home, you must focus on aesthetics, but you should also have a home inspection, just in case something serious needs to be done, as well. If you can install a new roof or furnace, it will show the buyers that you were on top of your game and will permit you to command a higher price. Pop to updates on BBQ Cart Covers for current tips.

If you are doing an extensive kitchen renovation, it is a good idea to set up a spot that you can utilize as a kitchen for the time being. Your kitchen might not be useable for a couple of weeks so have a microwave and a refrigerator elsewhere in the house so you can store food and make easy meals.

Any contractor who offers you a discount for paying in cash is doing something illegal, so don?t get involved with him. You won?t have any paper trail by paying with cash, and you therefore won?t have any recourse if he takes your money and leaves you with no home improvements completed.

Pay your contractor by check or credit card so you can stop payment if necessary. This is a great way to ensure that a scam artist doesn?t take your down payment and get out of town with it. Credit card is the best bet as you can dispute the transaction for quite a while after it goes through.

Home improvement is indeed a thing of great variety with so many strategies and plans and that is both its gift and its curse. It?s a gift because it has many options that are customizable and it?s a curse because, oftentimes, too many options make it difficult to decide. These tips should have made it a bit easier for you.

Take The Pain Out Of Understanding Health Insurance With These ...

Make sure to get health insurance, not only for yourself, but for your children. Children can have many complications that are very expensive without health insurance, like braces or growth disorders, as well as conditions requiring medication like ADHD. Having children insured is vital so that you can be certain that your budget covers any medical issues.

Health insurance is one area where it behooves consumers to shop around. There are thousands of companies that offer a wide variety of health insurance policies that may meet your needs, although you may be limited by your employer if you receive coverage from work. Not only do different companies offer different rates, they also offer different plans.

Remember, the cost of health insurance is not restricted to monthly premiums. All insurance policies require co-pays when you visit your primary care physician or even the hospital sometimes. Ask what your co-pay is and calculate whether or not the policy is worth it.

Make sure you know which hospitals and doctors are covered under your health insurance. If a practitioner that you favor doesn?t take your plan, you may need to keep looking. Typically insurance companies have a list of hospitals and doctors that they cover on their website. If they do not, you can request it from them.

If you plan on getting pregnant in the near future, it is important that you get a health insurance plan that will pay all of your expenses, from pregnancy to labor and delivery. This is vital to know since many insurance plans don?t cover certain things for pregnancy and labor.

Choose which type of health insurance policy works best for you. Select either a POS, PPO or HMO. Each has different pros and cons that you should find out and consider before you purchase a policy. You should have the choice to keep your current doctor.

When you are in the market for a new health insurance policy, first make sure that you understand all the laws and regulations that apply to health insurance in your local area. For instance, does the legislations where you live have any protection in place for people that have preexisting medical conditions? Understanding the relevant laws is necessary in order to determine whether an insurance carrier is illegally denying you adequate coverage.

When thinking about health insurance via your employer, check your loved ones? health and your personal health. If you are not dealing with any health issues, you may be tempted to buy insurance that has a cheaper premium. This may be enticing, but if health issues arise you could be in for some trouble.

Individual insurance plans give you more choices, but group insurance plans can cost you less money every month. The key to health insurance is always having a policy in place. To be without health insurance today is to court disaster. Life can come at you fast, and any sudden illness or accident could find you draining your life savings in no time at all. Protect yourself, your family and your assets with the appropriate health insurance coverage you need today.

Video: Michigan looking critical for Romney

NBC?s David Gregory discusses the importance of winning over Michigan voters to Mitt Romney?s campaign.

>> i think it's how critical it is is underscored by the question of what if romney loses? there are a lot of republicans say it would turn the race upside down. bring in more calls for somebody to come in as a savior into the race. so you could have another person jumping into the race or a lot of enthusiasm behind that idea. so much volatility. a real question about whether anybody can get the requisite number of delegates to finish this off.

>> we have to turn to the caucuses up in maine, all the votes apparently weren't in. they're still counting up there. could this thing swing away from him?

J&J consumer health segment recalls infant Tylenol

A Johnson & Johnson consumer health unit plagued by product recalls says it is pulling some versions of infant Tylenol off store shelves due to problems with a device that helps measure doses.

McNeil Consumer Healthcare says it is recalling about 574,000 bottles of a grape-flavored version of the liquid medicine, which was distributed nationally.

The medicine bottle comes with a syringe and has a protective cover, or flow restrictor, at the top to help measure the right dose. McNeil says that restrictor has been pushed into the bottle in some cases when the syringe is inserted.

McNeil is one of three business segments for J&J, which is based in New Brunswick, N.J. The consumer division has issued about two dozen recalls in more than two years.

New process can be used in repairing or replacing damaged or missing soft tissue

A new process for transforming discarded human fat into a soft-tissue substitute for use in reconstructive surgery is laying the groundwork for creating an Ontario-based regenerative medicine initiative focused on developing products for reconstructive and cosmetic surgery.

"Human fat is an abundant and accessible source of stem cells and proteins that can be used in tissue engineering," says Lauren Flynn, Queen's University chemical engineer who pioneered the process. "We use tissues that are normally discarded during surgery, to develop non-immunogenic structures that have shown great promise in promoting natural soft tissue regeneration."

Dr. Flynn's technology can be used in repairing or replacing damaged or missing soft tissue caused by traumatic injury, burns, congenital defects or tumour resections such as in breast cancer surgery. The process removes the cells and other components from fat leaving behind a component that, when implanted in the body, can stimulate the regeneration of healthy soft tissue.

Further development of the technology is possible through $192,500 in funding from MaRS Innovation Medical Sciences Competitive Proof of Principle. The program is part of the Ontario Centres of Excellence Institutional Proof of Principle program.

NASA to exchange 'flagship' missions for small-ball projects (+video)

NASA is drastically scaling back its Mars exploration initiatives in exchange for smaller, more efficient missions, agency officials say.?

NASA is fundamentally overhauling its Mars exploration strategy, ditching multibillion-dollar "flagship" missions in favor of cheaper, more efficient projects for now, agency officials announced Monday (Feb. 13).

The decision is a response to diminished funding for robotic exploration going forward. In his?federal budget request?for next year, which was revealed Monday (Feb. 13), President Barack Obama allocated $1.2 billion to NASA's planetary science programs ? a 20 percent cut from the current allotment of $1.5 billion, with further reductions expected over the next several years.

The cut is spurring a shift in NASA thinking about the best way to study Mars in the near term. This shift compels the agency to withdraw from the European-led?ExoMars missions, which aim to launch an orbiter and a drill-toting rover to the Red Planet in 2016 and 2018, respectively.

"Instead, we will develop an integrated strategy to ensure that the next steps for Mars exploration will support science as well as human exploration goals, and potentially take advantage of the 2018-2020 exploration window," NASA chief Charlie Bolden told reporters. "The budget provides support for this new approach." [7 Biggest Mysteries of Mars]

The new direction does not imperil NASA's $2.5 billion?Mars Science Laboratory?(MSL) mission, which will drop the 1-ton Curiosity rover onto the Martian surface this August to investigate if the Red Planet can, or ever did, support microbial life.

Nor does it affect the $485 million MAVEN mission, due to launch in late 2013 to study Mars' upper atmosphere and gather information about how the Red Planet's climate has changed over time.

However, NASA's new strategy acknowledges that the agency won't be launching ambitious, expensive "flagship" missions like MSL toward the Red Planet ? or any other solar system body ? anytime soon.

"A flagship mission in not on the table," said John Grunsfeld, NASA's associate administrator for science. "We're looking at building a moderate mission, and it's a partnership looking at synergies between the requirements of human spaceflight, science and the needs to demonstrate technologies that advance other missions in the future."

It makes sense to set up such partnerships, beyond simply spreading costs around the various branches of NASA, agency officials said. NASA has both science and exploration goals at Mars, after all; Obama has tasked the agency with getting humans to the Red Planet by the mid-2030s.

Bolden said details of the new Mars strategy should be worked out in a matter of months. The goal is to be ready to launch a mission by 2018 and/or 2020, to take advantage of favorable alignments between Earth and the Red Planet.

Vatican besieged by leaks, conspiracies (AP)

VATICAN CITY ? Money laundering at the Vatican bank. Corruption in the awarding of Vatican contracts. Even a purported plot to kill Pope Benedict XVI.

The Vatican is being besieged by near-daily leaks of confidential documents and tabloid-style reports of alleged financial mismanagement, political infighting and gossip about who might be the next pope ? all coming out at an exceedingly delicate time for the Holy See and Benedict himself.

The frescoed halls of the Apostolic Palace have been buzzing about the leaks, which have emerged as the pontiff prepares for the ceremony next week to crown 22 new cardinals ? the princes of the church who will elect his successor.

Such ceremonies always breed unseemly speculation about a future pontiff since they provide a rare chance for cardinals new and old to size one another up. But the Feb. 18 consistory has taken on greater gravitas since the 84-year-old Benedict is showing signs of slowing down.

Conspiracy theorists reading the Italian media of late might also point to another looming date as reason for why the Vatican's dirty laundry is being aired now: In June, a European commission will decide whether the Holy See has abided by tough international anti-money laundering and anti-terror finance laws.

Compliance would mark a key step in the Vatican's goal of joining the so-called "white list" of countries that share financial information ? a designation the Vatican hopes will forever dispense with its reputation as a scandal-plagued, secrecy-obsessed tax haven.

The flurry of articles and television news programs seemingly seeking to reinforce that reputation ? regardless of whether it's deserved ? certainly can't help the Holy See's bid.

All of which explains why the Vatican has been aggressively shooting down the reports with an unprecedented array of detailed, line-by-line refutations and sarcastic jabs at the journalists reporting them in a bid to set the record straight.

Almost lost in the shuffle is that the Vatican in recent weeks has done more to come into compliance with international financial norms than perhaps at any time in its history. It has ratified three major U.N. conventions, rewritten its law on money laundering and, separately, scored a legal victory in the U.S. concerning its embattled bank, the Institute for Religious Works or IOR.

The most explosive story to hit newsstands came on Friday: reports that the Vatican had received a confidential letter last month from a top Vatican official describing how an Italian cardinal visiting China had spoken about a presumed plot to kill Benedict this year. The document also said the pontiff was grooming Milan's archbishop as his successor.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, dismissed that report as "so completely beyond reality and hardly serious that I don't even want to consider it."

But Lombardi has taken the other reports alleging financial mismanagement far more seriously, warning of possible legal action against the media outlets responsible.

Veteran Vatican correspondent Andrea Tornielli said the reports showed a clear power struggle is under way inside the Vatican, "the outcome of which is uncertain yet devastating," concerning both the fate of the pope's deputy, Secretary of State Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, and any future conclave to elect the next pope.

Another Vatican commentator who has been highly critical of Bertone's leadership, Sandro Magister, put it this way in a recent column: "The secretary of state is increasingly alone, in a curia he does not govern and with a pope he does not help."

The question that has yet to be answered is why the reports are coming out now, and whether they are more related to internal power struggles over Bertone's leadership or external tensions between the Bank of Italy and Italian prosecutors on the one hand, and the IOR on the other. As the financial institution of a sovereign city state, the Vatican's IOR is outside the Italian central bank's regulatory grasp.

Some of the leaked documents have carried the processing stamp of the Vatican secretariat of state, implying an internal leak. Other reports have been based on information from Rome judicial authorities. Regardless, however, none of them appear to be so grave as to cause significant harm to the Holy See, particularly given that the Vatican has taken a remarkable steps in the past year to be more transparent in its financial dealings and cooperative with international requests for financial data.

The media campaign kicked off last month with the publication on television news program "The Untouchables" of leaked letters from the former No. 2 in the Vatican city state administration, Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, to Benedict and Bertone in 2011. In one, Vigano begged not to be transferred after exposing what he said was corruption in the awarding of Vatican contracts.

Vigano was subsequently named the Vatican's ambassador to Washington ? a high-ranking post that was perhaps better suited to his diplomatic background but that nevertheless sealed the impression that he had been punished for stepping on too many toes in his cost-cutting efforts.

Lombardi initially issued a lengthy statement lamenting the leak but insisting that Vigano enjoyed the "undoubtable esteem and trust of the pope." A week later, Vigano's now-retired boss and the three current top officials of the Vatican city state changed course, saying Vigano's assertions were the baseless "fruit of erroneous evaluations."

Lombardi subsequently shot down an article in the leading newspaper Corriere della Sera suggesting that a monsignor with links to the Vatican's Congregation for the Causes of Saints had lost euro1.6 million by investing with a Bernard Madoff-like schemer.

Corriere identified the source of that story as Luca Tescaroli, the Rome prosecutor who has pursued a 30-year-old case concerning the worst scandal at the IOR: the death of Roberto Calvi, the Catholic banker who helped managed the Vatican's investments and was found hanging from London's Blackfriars Bridge in 1982.

Calvi headed the Banco Ambrosiano, which collapsed in 1982 after the disappearance of $1.3 billion in loans made to dummy companies in Latin America. The Vatican had provided letters of credit for the loans.

Calvi was found hanging a short time later, his pockets loaded with bricks and cash. After an initial ruling of suicide, murder charges were filed against five people, including a major Mafia figure, but all were acquitted.

While denying wrongdoing, the Vatican Bank paid $250 million to Ambrosiano's creditors.

The case remains unresolved, but Tescaroli has recently revived judicial requests to the Vatican for information about it ? information the Vatican insists it has provided.

Tescaroli was the featured guest this week on "The Untouchables," which has been on a campaign of sorts against the IOR. It is hosted by Gianluigi Nuzzi, author of the 2009 book Vatican SpA about the IOR scandals that was based on a trove of leaked Vatican documents.

Separately, the IOR's president and director general remain under investigation by Rome prosecutors who allege they broke Italian law in 2010 by trying to transfer money from two IOR accounts without identifying the sender or recipient. The Vatican says the matter was the result of a misunderstanding.

Almost lost in all the noise was a victory that the Holy See scored for the IOR in the United States on Feb. 1: A federal judge in Mississippi dismissed with prejudice a fraud and racketeering lawsuit against the Holy See filed in 2002 by the insurance commissioners of five southern states alleging Vatican involvement in jailed financier Martin Frankel's scheme to buy and loot insurance companies of some $200 million.

The Vatican's lawyer called for the media to report on the "undignified" demise of the case and not just on claims of corruption.

"That inflammatory allegations against the Holy See and the IOR are easily disseminated and make good fodder for conspiracy theorists cannot be doubted," the lawyer said in a statement.

Cavs' Irving out next 2 games with concussion (AP)

INDEPENDENCE, Ohio ? Cavaliers rookie guard Kyrie Irving will spend the weekend resting and recovering from his concussion.

Irving is sitting out Cleveland's next two home games ? against Milwaukee and Philadelphia ? as the Cavs follow the NBA's new guidelines on treating head injuries with their young star.

"He's getting better but we are going through NBA protocol," coach Byron Scott said following Friday's shootaround. "He'll be out tonight and tomorrow and we'll go from there. He's making improvement but we're not going to risk putting him out there until the doctors say he's fine."

Irving's next chance to play will be Wednesday against Indiana. The Cavs play their next eight games at home.

The 19-year-old Irving was at the team's facility Friday, but Scott said the point guard did not do any physical activity. Under the league's concussion guidelines, which were implemented at the start of training camps, players are not permitted to do anything physical until their symptoms subside completely.

Scott would not address if Irving is still experiencing any symptoms.

Irving, the No. 1 overall draft pick who has helped the Cavs to a surprising 10-14 start, complained of a headache on Wednesday, when he was diagnosed with the concussion shortly before Cleveland hosted the Los Angeles Clippers.

On Tuesday in Miami, Irving was knocked down in the foul lane while driving to the basket in the fourth quarter and his head struck Heat guard Dwyane Wade's knee. Irving did not have any symptoms following the game and returned with the team from Florida.

However, the team said his headache worsened during the night and when he warmed up before the game.

The Cavs intend to be extra careful as they treat Irving, who was evaluated on Thursday at the Cleveland Clinic.

"We all know how serious this thing can be and that's why we are taking such a cautious look at this to make sure that when he comes back he's OK," Scott said. "We don't want to put a young man at risk ? that's the biggest thing. The NBA has done a terrific job as far as trying to diagnose and figure out what to do with concussions."

Ramon Sessions started Tuesday night and scored a season-high 24 points with 13 assists as the Cavaliers beat the Clippers in their first game this season without Irving.

Sessions will continue to start while Irving is out. The Cavs also signed Ben Uzoh from Rio Grande of the NBA Development League to a 10-day contract as an insurance policy. Uzoh played in 42 games for New Jersey last season.

Irving is the first high-profile player to sustain a concussion since the league applied its policy to determine when players return from head injuries.

After a player is diagnosed with a concussion, he must complete a series of steps to confirm he's healthy enough for competition. Once he's symptom-free, the player must make it through increasing stages of exertion ? from a stationary bike, to jogging, to agility work, to non-contact team drills ? while ensuring the symptoms don't return after each one.

During this process, the neurologist hired to lead the concussion program needs to be consulted before the player is cleared.

The NBA followed the NHL and Major League Baseball in instituting a concussion protocol.

Scott, who won three championships during 14 seasons as a player, believes the policy is needed ? and perhaps overdue.

"I was asked the other day if I had a concussion and I don't know," he said. "I got hit back in the day so many times and had headaches and woke up and still went to practice. It wasn't a big deal then so being cautious about it is important and Kyrie understands right now.

"He wasn't real happy about it the other night, but we're doing this all in his best interests."

News Corp 2Q beats Street despite hacking charges

(AP) ? Rupert Murdoch's News Corp. said Wednesday that net income grew by nearly two-thirds in the final quarter of 2011, despite expenses related to ongoing phone hacking investigations of its U.K. newspaper unit.

The company has settled with about 60 phone hacking victims so far, but a new wave of lawsuits is coming and three parallel police probes are underway. All of the proceedings are expected to keep News Corp.'s legal bills high in the near future.

Net income in the three-month period that ended on Dec. 31 rose to $1.06 billion, or 42 cents per share, from $642 million, or 24 cents per share in the same period a year earlier.

Excluding one-time benefits and an $87 million charge it took related to government-led probes, adjusted earnings came to 39 cents per share. That topped the 34 cents per share expected by analysts polled by FactSet. Executives said about 85 percent of $87 million charge represented legal and consulting fees. The remainder went toward out-of-court settlements.

It marked the second quarter in a row that New York-based News Corp. has booked significant expenses related to the British probes, which flared up last summer. Hacking revelations caused the company to shutter its tabloid News of the World in July. In the quarter through September, the company took a $91 million charge due to the scandal.

Asked how long the company would continue to book expenses to deal with the crisis, Chief Operating Officer Chase Carey declined to provide an estimate.

"We're cooperating with authorities. That dictates part of it," he said on a conference call with journalists and analysts. "We're not going to predict or target it. We're going to do what it takes to make things right."

Chief financial officer David Devoe also declined to provide an estimate for scandal-related charges for the remainder of the fiscal year through this June.

Excluding scandal-related charges, the company said it expects annual adjusted operating profits to grow in the "low to mid-teen" percentages from the $4.98 billion a year ago, which is roughly in line with analysts' expectations.

Thanks to growth at pay TV channels like Fox News and FX and better results from its movie studio, revenue in the quarter rose 2 percent to $8.98 billion from $8.76 billion a year ago. The figure is slightly higher than the $8.94 billion expected by analysts.

Closing the scandal-wracked tabloid will diminish British newspaper revenue by $150 million this year, while its advertising flyer business is expected to fall $100 million and its Australian newspapers are expected to shrink $100 million, Carey said. The company has put new executives in place to help stabilize some of those businesses.

Even amid the problems, analysts believe the company has too much cash on its balance sheet at $9.4 billion by the end of December, compared to about $15.5 billion in long-term debt. Devoe said the company was committed to spending another $2.3 billion in share buybacks through June, on top of the $2.7 billion it has spent since last July. Carey said the company would consider another buyback plan or even higher dividends after that.

The current buybacks, executed daily according to securities filings, have helped prop up News Corp.'s stock since the scandal broke.

News Corp.'s stock, which fell more than 1 percent in after-hours trade, gained 3 cents to $19.65 after Carey opened the door to further share buybacks.

While analysts were disappointed the company did not raise its earnings guidance above expectations, the market appeared to be relieved that the company is prepared to draw down its cash balance and return the money to investors.

"The less cash they have, the less chance they have to buy something that will disappoint people," said Susquehanna Financial analyst Vasily Karasyov.
